GIRL’S RAGE TO GATCH LINER
IN WRONG TRAINTHEN 30 MILES DASH
A girl’s 30-mile taxi dash from Bolton to Liverpool, after losing her way on the railway, concluded in her dramatic embarkation for New York as the last gangway was being withdrawn between the landing-stage and the liner. The heroine of the incident was Miss Mary Murphy, aged 20, who, accompanied by her sister, who was to see her off, left home at Poulton-le-Fylde, near Blackpool to join the Cunard liner Caronia for an Atlantic trip to her aunt in New York.
By some mischance she boarded the wrong train and to her dismay discovered that she was travelling via Preston and Wigan.
Arriving at Bolton an hour and aquarter before she was due to leave the Mersey, she hired a taxi-cab, informed the driver of her dilemma and offered £2 for speedy transport. The 30-mile dash commenced and the minutes as well as the miles ticked away swiftly as the non-stop run proceeded.
As the last gangway, was being withdrawn from ttie Caronia there was a cry “Wait for me!” and the two girls, accompanied by a porter and the taxidriver carrying luggage, ran on to the landing-stage. Farewells were exchanged in a moment.
Miss Murphy leapt aboard and within two minutes the vessel cast off her moorings, whilst people stood transfixed at a pair of blue eyes shedding tears of emotion over a smiling, face. The great race against time had been won with only a few seconds to spare.
