MAKARA COUNTY
Titahi Bay Reserve ROAD IMPROVEMENT The monthly meeting of the Makara County Council was held yesterday. The chairman, Mr. E. Windley, presided, and there were also present: Messrs. L. C. Bryant, D. Prosser, R. G. Mexted, W. S. Wheeler, A. J. Giddings, J. Purchase, and R. W. Bothamley. Ohariu Valley Road. The district engineer (Mr. R. W. P. Ronayne) wrote stating that it had been decided to recommend a £1 for £1 subsidy amounting to £420 for work on the Ohariu Valley Road deviation, on the understanding that the council placed twenty unemployed married men from Wellington City on this job. He understood the council was agreeable to this, and the necessary arrangements could be made to obtain these men from the Labour Bureau. A weekly return stating the number of men employed should be forwarded to the Public Works Department not later than Saturday every week. A recommendation had been forwarded to the Head Office for an additional £2OO on a £2 for £1 basis for further work, such as widening between the deviation and junction. , I
The chairman explained that, in company with other councillors, he had inspected the roads in the county, and he had made further proposals that improvements should be effected on the South Takapu and Horokiwi roads, which would have absorbed more unemployed, but the district engineer could not see his way to put these works in hand. Titahi Bay Recreation Reserve. The Lands and Survey Department advised that a recreation reserve at Titahi Bay, containing 1 acre 3 roods 27 perches, had been vested in the council, which had been appointed a Domain Board to control the area. On the motion of the chairman it was decided that the council should become the Domain Board for the area. Makara Hill. The necessity for widening the road from Makara hill down to the junction was brought up by Councillor A. J. Giddings. At present, he said, the road was practically a one-way road, a* there was not room for vehicles to pass in many places. Councillor J. Purchase said that plenty of spoil was available for widening purposes, and the cost should not be great. The chairman said that the question would be gone into, and it could be considered at the next meeting. Paying the Piper. A request by Mr. H. H. Meyer, of Johnsonville, for the formation of a sealed footpath at Ngahauranga was received, and it was decided to proceed with the work as soon as opportunity presented itself. “As this part contributes over half of the revenue from the Ngahauranga riding, it is high time something was done in this direction,” Mr. Meyer wrote, “for it has been paying the piper for years as far as rates are concerned, and nothing to show for them.” *■ '■'•'Tswa Flat Wants. The Tawa Flat Progressive Association forwarded resolutions passed at a meeting held on June 9. The first requested the council to form a footpath on the low level between the station road and the school lane at Tawa Flat, and the second requested that an electric light should be placed on the corner of McLennan Street and the Main Road, where passengers alight and board buses. It was decided to comply with the second request, and to consider the first application. Accounts amounting to £2330/7/5 were passed for payment.
