A SCOUT RALLY

There were over 100 Bcouts and cobs present at our rally in Waipawa, including 40 from Frimley (Hast, ings), 21 from Waipukurau, and 43 from Waipawa. The day turned out to be wet, and it was with anxious eyes, we scanned the sky for the sun. At last it appeared and we were able to ring up Hastings and tell them it was fine. At 11 o’clock they came, and we marched through the town to Coronation Park. After we arrived the programme was read out, and the first item was the relay races. In the. under 14, Waipawa was the winner, with Frimley second. In the over 14, the places were reversed, Frimley coming first and Waipawa second. With Frimley and Waipawa equal with 4 points each, the football match was greeted with great enthusiasm and excitement When the teams filed out, Frimley looked a very heavy proposition, and after a few minutes, when Frimley scored, amidst wild enthusiasm of the Frimley supporters, they looked sure of winning it Play zigzagged up and down the field, and there was a scrum five yards from Frimley goal-line. Waipawa heeled cleanly and the ball reached the second five-eighths, who dummied to fall over the line with several of Frimley’s players on top of him. A hush fell over the ground when the kick was taken, but with a good straight kick the ball sailed over the crossbar. At half-time the score was Waipawa 5, Frimley 3. After halftime Waipawa attacked strongly, but were kept back. Once the ball came out to Frimley’s speedy winger, who scored the first try, and he dashed down the field to be brought down a yard from the goal-line. The play moved up to Frimley territory, and in a passing rush Waipawa again scored. Time was sounded soon after, leaving Waipawa winners by Bto 3. The prize was a photograph album. After the football match the prizes were presented, and Frimley and Waipukurau went home in their lorries." —From “The Kaka's P-L,” Waipawa.
