ECLIPSE APPEAL
“Worthy Scientific Work”
An offer of £5 toward the fund for financing the party of New Zealand observers who hope to go to Nluafou Island In October next to make eclipse observations is made in a letter received by “The Dominion” from the secretary of the Hawera Astronomical Society (Mr. S. Wall). Mr. Wall writes:—
“I am directed by the council of the Hawera Astronomical Society to inform you that the society is prepared to donate the sum of £5 to the New Zealand Astronomical Society toward the financing of the proposed expedition from New Zealand to take observations of the coming eclipse of the sun. “In view of the fact that financial stringency is restricting assistance from the Government and that there is grave risk of a New Zealand expedition—the only British one possible—not eventuating, we suggest that kindred societies, and those of the public who can, will also help to finance this worthy scientific work.”
