UNEMPLOYMENT

Sir,—-A great deal has been written on the subject of unemployment, but little has been written on how to overcome this, our great national difficulty. I therefore submit the following for the consideration of the powers that be: — 1. The amusement tax of one penny per shilling graduated up to the amount already taxed be reintroduced by the Government. 2- That proprietors of places of amusement, be taxed at the rate of (id.) one farthing for every shilling of gross takings. This tax not to be added to prices of admission. . , „ 3. The sum of sixpence be added to all radio licenses issued in New Zealand, on condition that the Radio Broadcasting Company contribute one penny halfpenny (lid.) out of every license paid to them. Penny halfpenny not to be added to amount of license payable by licensee. 4. Amateur sports bodies where no person receives personal financial benefit be exempt from tax of one farthing on price of admission. 5. That entertainments given for national or local charity, ambulance, fire brigades, church, or school funds, or on behalf of homes or orphanages or persons in distress, be exempt from both taxes. 6 That the revenue derived from this tax be used by the Government for relief work for unemployed. Trusting that this suggestion will at least start something going,—l am. etc.. 808 SEAT. Wellington, June 12.
