RAILWAY EXPENDITURE
Sir,—In a leading article on railway expenditure you pointed out that the expenditure had increased by £500,009 while the revenue only improved by £39,000 for the last year. One cannot wonder at this steady increase when we spend so freely on so-called railway improvements as the Garrett engines costing over £lOO,OOO, the costly automatic electric signalling system installed on the Christchurch to Otira section in order to save the cost of five tablet porters, £77,000 on a balloon loop on the Dargaville line to redeem a political promise, and £l4 000 for two special carriages for the general manager. Then in the Public Works section we read of the men complaining of suffering through engineering mistakes.—l am, etc.. ELECTOR. Wellington, June 10.
