MOUNT VICTORIA TUNNEL CONTRACT

Sir,—For nearly six months those unfortunate. enough to be residing near thenew tunnel have borne with patience the noise of the blasting ip connection with this work. Only once during that time have I noticed anyone return the compliment and utter a protest. This, sir, indicates the extent of their long-suffer-ing, and one can only conclude that many have felt inclined to write, but have modestly deferred to that “abler pen than mine.” I can’t wait any longer for it to appear. . ~ „ Just when most of us were thankfully thinking that the worst of the blasting was over, another nightmare has arisen in the form of the new concrete mixer. On a number of occasions recently this machine has been operated into the small hours of the morning and last night ran until after 4 a.m. Now, sir, it seems to me that if all the concrete mixing necessary cannot be done between the hours of 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. there is something radically wrong. lam sure everyone wishes the contractors well in their desire to put up a record for this work in the matter of time, but surely it is not intended that this shall be done at the expense of the rest of the residents in the neighbourhood? There is a further matter that I should like to call attention to. The shift working the mixer make the night hideous with their calls to one another in an effort to eclipse the noise of the mixer. It is doubtless necessary to communicate at intervals with the man in charge of the mixer, but I need hardly say that the method adopted is rather primitive. I trust that those responsible will find means of improving matters in the directions indicated, and so reduce the inconvenience to the residents to a reasonable minimum.—l am, etc.. A SQUARE PEAT-.
