ART UNNONS
Sir,—l was much interested to see the Rev. Harry’s letter on “Get Rich Quick," also the replies thereto. The reverend gentleman is right. Pleasure is the spirit of the day; and the expectancy of a win means pleasure, and if you lose, well, play the man and try again, that's all. But it opens up this question: Dare any minister of the Gospel expect the life of to-day to be other than a gamble wheh raffles are allowed at church bazaars? “Raffles,” did I say? Pardon me, I meant "Competitions” of skill, as they are called. You enter a church bazaar and you are beseeched with “Have a ticket on the cake,” pr “Guess the weight of the sheep—only sixpence.” Young ladies with a cushion or supper-cloth—all delectable and tempting, 1/- per guess; the name of a doll, the yards of string or peas in a bottle, Is this not a gamble? Would it not be well if the Church and her ministers read St Matthew, chapter vii, verses 3 to 5, and see if there be not a beam in their own eye before pointing out the great big mote in the eye of their brothers? —I am, etc., OBSERVER. Woodville, June 0.
