ANTI-CANE CAMPAIGN

* — LEGAL TRIAL BEFORE PUNISHMENT. Mr. Peter Freeman, the British Socialist M.P. for Brecon and Ra'duor, _ is strongly opposed to children being thrashed in school without “previous trial and conviction by an independent legal tribunal”—and the right to appeal. “My protest,” said Mr. Freeman, “is against, the infliction of corporal punishment by an accuser, who constitutes himself judge, jury, and lord high executioner all iu one.”

Trial by ini independent tribunal before punishment, Im declared, was the recognised right of the humblest citizen, and he went on: “Children, more than any other members of fhe community, need this protection. How otherwise can they be safeguarded against cruelties and barbarities?” Mr. Freeman, who is a vegetarian, a teetotaller, and a non-smoker, is the father of a girl of twelve and a boy of ten. He said that he no more thought of punishing them than they thought of punishing him.
