That there are about eight hundred and sixty registered unemployed in Christchurch was the information given to the City Council on Monday night hv Councillor E. H. Andrews, in reply D. G. Sullivan, M.P. There was no possibility of the council doing as much for the unemployed this yeat as last year, when they had the advantage of a big loan. The temper of tbe ratepayers, as far as he could gauge it was against any more such loans. He would have the estimates in about a fortnight and would then be better able to say what they could do. About 55 men had been employed on relief works during the past fortnight rne international cable news appearing in this Issue is published by arrangement with the Australian Press Association ana tbe “Sun”-"Herald” New* Service Limited.
