GOVERNOR’S TOUR

FIRST DAY AT WANGANUI ENTHUSIASTIC RECEPTION Dominion Special Service. Wauganui, June 10. A fine rain was falling when the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, and Lady Bledisloe, arrived in Wanganui this morning. At the Wanganui railway station a large crowd had assembled, Including representatives of the various organisations of the city. The Hon. W. A Veitch, the Mayor (Mr. W. J. Rogers), the city councillors and Mr. J. Hogan, M.P., welcomed their Excellencies, and Mr. Rogers called for three hearty cheers, which were enthusiastically given. The Technical College students were drawn up as a guard of honour, anfl were inspected by his Excellency. The Ist Battalion band was also in attendance. Leaving the railway station, their Excellencies were driven to the Rutland Hotel, where they will stay during their visit to the city. Rotary Club Luncheon. Lord and Lady Bledisloe were the guests of the Wanganui Rotary Club to-day at luncheon. Sir John Hanham, A.D.C., accompanied them. Among the guests were Mr. Veitch, Miss Veitch, the Mayor, and Mr. J. T Hogan. “We have followed your progress around cities and provincial towns and noticed your desire to bring city and country together,” said the president, Mr. F. Treloar. “This has always been Rotary’s programme. There can beno prosperity unless the two are united. We have been grateful at the attitude you have adopted, and Rotary, as an organisatioii, will give you all the help in its power. On behalf of the Wanganui Rotary Club I wish you both health and happiness.” Applause greeted his Excellency when he rose fo thank the Rotarians for their loyal welcome. “For many years my interest in Rotary has been very real,” he said in his reply. “We genuinely appreciate your welcome to your interesting city.” Mr. Downes spoke on “Historical S laces around Wanganui,” and Miss ulie Werry and Mr. Hubert Carter sang, accompanied by Mr. H. Nelson. Civic Reception. The Opera House was crowded to-night when a civic reception was tendered to Lord and Lady Bledisloe. The Mayor said he deemed it a great honour to welcome their Excellencies to Wanganui, and he trusted they would have an enjoyable stay while in the city. Expressions of welcome were also tendered by Messrs. Veitch, Hogan, W. Morison, and D. Mackintosh. The two latter represented the .country people. On rising to reply, Lord Bledisloe was given an ovation. During his address, his Excellency made a strong appeal for the support of New Zealand industries, which, he contended, would greatly help in the relief of unemployment Both he and her Excellency would do all they could to further the prosperity of New Zealand during their term. During the reception the insignia of an officer of the Order of St John was presented to Assistant-Commissioner J. Brine, who is in charge of the Wanganui district of the s>t. John Ambulance Brigade, and to Mr. G. H. B. Sleight, chairman of the Wanganui centre of the St. John Association. On Thursday evening their Excellencies will arrive at New Plymouth, where a civic reception will be given in. their honour. Visits to the hospital, the winter show, the women’s club, and attendance at a gathering of school children • are included in the programme of engagements, as are also visits to the districts of Inglewood and Waitara. Leaving New Plymouth on Saturday afternoon, their Excellencies will spend Sunday at Mount Egmont, and on Monday, June 16, they will leave for Palmerston North. A public reception, a civic luncheon, the opening of the winter show, visits to the hospital, to the Massey Agricultural College, to Flock Hout a reception by the Manawatu County Ladies’ Club are among the engagements which the Governor-General and Lady Bledisloe have undertaken to fulfil at Palmerston North. On June 19 their Excellencies will arrive at Wellington and will go into residence at Government House for the winter months. I
