CHAMPIONSHIP TABLE

The following table shows the positions of the various teams in the Senior A and Senior B competitions to date: —

An Even Game. Y.M.C.A. and Hutt played an even game at Karori Park last Saturday. Hutt appeared to have the advantage in the first half, but after the interval the opposition of the Y.M.C.A. forwards proved tfao/ strtong. An outstanding player for Y.M.C.A. was MacDonald, who was prominent in both spells. He scored a very fine goal in the first spell as the result of a splendid solo run.. Hutt was unfortunate in losing the services of Judd in the second spell, and the team was forced to finish the game without a goalkeeper. Y.M.C.A.’s win was a lastminute victory, MacDonald scoring the winning goal. Last-Minute Win.

Wesley put up a good fight against ’Varsity on Saturday. The’ end of the game was most exciting, for the score, until two minutes before the final whistle, was 2 all. Good play on the part of Spence-Sales and Paul was responsible for ’Varsity scoring the winning goal. Paul’s play was outstanding. Bishop and Simpson also gave good accounts of themselves, while for Wesley Giles and Daniell were valuable assets. , t A Brilliant Goalkeeper.

E. Guy, the Wellington senior A goalkeeper, was in first-class form in the match against Karori on Saturday. Since the beginning of the season, Guy has allowed only four goals to get past him. His tactics in goal are well worth studying, and he must surely be the most expert goalkeeper in Wellington. But for his. excellent work on Saturday Karori would certainly have scored several more goals against the Wellington team.

Future .Matches.' A request from* the Bush | Hockey Union that it might play against a Wellington team was received at Monday night’s meeting of the Wellington Hockey Association. The W.H-A. decided to ask the union if it could play in July, if possible on a Wednesday, a fortnight prior to the Challenge Shield match. It was also decided to ask Otaki for a match on the Wednesday prior to the fshield match, and also to ask Wairarapa for a Wednesday match, early in July.

Club Uniforms. , Complaints have reached the inanagement committee of the Wellington Hockey Association from referees that a number of players have not been wearing their club uniforms while playing in the Saturday matches. The matter was discussed at the last meeting of the W.H.A., and it was decided to circularise all the clubs to the effect that club uniforms must be worn by all members of the various teams. WOMEN’S HOCKEY

(by “Critic.”) Miss Munt, of the Karori senior team, caught “Critic’s” eye as a player of much promise. The Hutt second senior eleven possess a forward of outstanding ability in Miss E. Judd. Her play against Huia was above the ordinary. „ Miss M. Hawkins, Swifts senior B full-back, played a fine game against Karori, time and again holding up determined rushes by the opposition forwards. She was undoubtedly a defence in herself, and is a great acquisition to Swifts. If she could only secure the necessary time off she would easily secure her place in a representative team. Ramblers found the goalkeeping of Miss Butler, the ’Varsity, custodian, more staunch than they anticipated. This little ’keeper, who showed a great amount of nervousness last year when playing for Wellington against Horowhenua, has developed into a very reliable goalkeeper, and under the able guidance of Miss Mildred Huggins, who has represented Wellington in this particular department of the game, she (Miss Butler)* should progress into a very fine goalkeeper. Miss E. Smith was again seen to advantage for Ramblers, her tw% goals against ’Varsity being magnificent efforts. She is brilliant with the stick, anil seems to have a wonderful knowledge of anticipating the opposition movements.’ Miss Sybil Swinburne, Old Girls’ left wing, played one of her greatest games to date against Training College. Her team combined excellently, and gave her the necessary support to play a wonderful left-wing game. If she maintains the brilliant form 6f Saturday in the trial games she cannot help regaining her place on the left wing of the Wellington team to compete at the Dominion tournament in the South Island.

That diminutive but enterprising 'Varsity forward, Miss Blacklock, was a real battler for her team against Ramblers, and but for over-running the ball on one occasion would undoubtedly have scored. She also showed cleverness in the handling of the stick. Mrs. M. Chapman and Miss Laurenson right and left halves respectively of Ramblers, were noticed to be doing exactly the right thing expected of this department, viz., the constant feeding of the forwards with the ball. They both were untiring and are to be highly commended on their fine exhibition of halfback play. Miss Lucy Dick gave a stylish performance in goal, bringing, off some wonderful clearances.

Miss Vera Clarke’, was seen to advantage for Swifts’ second eleven against Karori. Her goal was due to Jier bustling tactics in the circle and grit and determination. Miss Wiffen was a tower of strength in gdal to Old Girls’ second senior team in tho game against Wenerei, saving her side on numerous occasions. Miss I. Hollis at full-back also plaved a great game. Misses D. Smith (centre-forward) and Amy Jenner were prominent for Hutt junior B against Huia. Miss Leech, centre-forwai . for Hospital, is a hard worker, but she was prone to obstruct. The team’s forward line show good understanding, and with the constant backing up of the halves get plenty of opportunities.

General Notes. It was lamentable to watch the Huia senior forwards tapping the ball in the circle in the match against Hutt. To see them on Saturday gave one the impression thnt they had never been taught what to do with the ball when they get it into tho circle.

Old Girls have developed into a very strong combination this year, and it now looks like the ex-collegians holding a rosy chance of annexing the senior A championship. Old Girls are leading Hutt by one point. The defeat of Huia on Saturday and the win of Wenerei leaves the last-nam-ed team in a winning position for the senior B honours, being four points in the lead.

Hospital was seen in town for the first time, when it met and soundly trounced Eastbourne. The nurses are a fine combination and caused much favourable comment with their natty aai-
