ENGLISH CUP FINAL
WHY IT WAS NOT BROADCAST
CHARGES OBJECTED TO Reasons why the English Cup final was not broadcast, thereby causing disappointment to enthusiasts in New Zealand, as well as in other countries, were given by Mr. F. Campbell, chairman of the New Zealand Football Association, at the council meeting last evening. A circular letter from the English Football Association contained the following statement which it had decided to issue in reference to the British Broadcasting Corporation, said Mr. Campbell: •—“The Correspondence which has been published by the British Broadcasting Corporation shows that the only difference between us was that they ’wished to sav in what manner the moneys paid should be applied by the Football Association. We objected to their interference with the application. They not only refused to give way, but the incorrect statements and allegations with regard to the commercialism and professionalism affecting the Football Association which have appeared in the Radio Times’ prevent further consideration unless these statements and allegations are unreservedly withdrawn.” The matter, said Mr. Campbell, arose over the refusal of the English hootball Association to give permission for the broadcasting of the final at M embley, as it considered it affected the gates, and if the weather was bad people stayed at home and listened in. The ing Corporation said it was for the benefit of the sick and invalids, but the F.A. considered that the Broadeasting Corporation was a commercial body, ine corporation in. its turn charged the r .A. with being a commercial body and rrferred to professionalism. It offered to pay £lOO for the broadcasting of the match, on condition that the money was donated to charity. The Football Association declined to be dictated to. saying it had raised more money for chanty than any other sports organisation. Foliowin., a further statement by the Broadcasting Corporation, the Football Association broke off negotiations with it. consequently no report of the final was broadcast. -
