FACE AT THE WINDOW.
A COUPLE DISTURBED There was a stir in the Central Fire Station just after 9 o’clock last evening. A call had come through from the alarm-box at the corner of Blair and Wakefield Streets. With their customary promptitude, the brigadesmen on duty sprang to their places, and very soon two fire engines were speeding toward Blair Street At first no fire could be discovered, and then, through a window on the second stc y of the Bank of New South Wales building (on the Courtenay Place end of the street) there was seen the reflection of dancing flames. Immediately a ladder was run out from a fire engine to the window, and as soon as it was in place, a fireman dashed up it, ready to break into the room. When he reached the top and looked through the window he got a big surprice—but not half such a surprise as he gave two people who were sitting in front of a good, old-fashioned coal fire, the flames of which were casting a ruddy glow over the otherwise unlighted room. Explanations followed, and the brigade returned to the station, and the couple to their interrupted conversation. This time, however, they turned the light on in the room.
