NOT HIS TO SELL
DEAL WITH MOTOR-CAR
Admission that he had attempted to sell a car which was not his, to effect which he had committed forgery, was made in ™ e xolice Court by James Carruthers Black, who was accordingly committed for sentence.
The charges against accused were those of obtaining from Alfred William Weine at Wellington on March 18, £9O by false pretences, and forging a receipt for £7 9/4 by altering it to £7O/9/4, causing it to be acted upon as genuine. . Albert Weine, basket-maker, of Kilbirnie, said he met accused for the first time on March 14 last. The meeting was by arrangement, as accused had for sale a car, for which he wanted £llO. Witness inspected the car, and later made an offer of £9O, which was accepted. Accused called at witness’s house to complete the deal. He showed 1 witness an insurance policy and said the car was covered. He also said he had bought it from a firm, and he exhibited receipts to show that he had made full payment. Witness had completed the deal with accused, ami paid the money, accused giving witness a receipt and handing over the car. Witness had since been informed hv a motor firm that accused still owed £6O on the car, and that unless witness paid that amount the car would be taken in. Detective Murray read a statement made by accused, in which accused said he had undertaken to buy the car on a hire-purchase agreement, but had met with difficulty in keeping up the monthly payments owing to falling out of work. He had tried to persuade the. firm to buy the car back, but unsuccessfully. However, he understood from remarks by the manager that he could sell the car, and be relieved of further liability. Accused had consequently taken steps to dispose of tlie car, and had represented to Weine that the car was his own. In support of this representation he had forged the receipt.
Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Bail was refused.
