ARRESTED IN CAR

WELL-KNOWN JOCKEY FINED £lOO INTOXICATION CHARGE Dominion Special Service. Auckland, April 10. At one time one of the best-known jockeys in the Dominion, Benjamin Kinsman Deeley, aged 50, was yesterday arrested in Karangahape Road for being in a state of intoxication while In charge of a motor-car. Deeley, for whom Mr. Allan Moody appeared, pleaded guilty to the charge at the Police Court this morning. Senior-Sergeant Powell said that a traffic inspector yesterday saw Deeley driving his car in Karangahape Road. He was unable to control his car, so the inspector gave him in charge of a constable. Twice previously Deeley had bein convicted of a similar offence. He had been fined £lO in 1923 and £25 on August 6, 1928. “In the past this man was regarded as one of the best jockeys in New Zealand,” said Mr. Moody. “Unfortunately Deeley took to drink some years ago and lost his jockey’s license. At the same time he was greatly worried as result ot a considerable amount of domestic trouble. “I know of my own knowledge that he made a good fight against his affliction,” added counsel. “He Is steady for a long while, and then there is an outburst when he takes a little too much liquor. I w’ould earnestly ask vour Worship not to send him to gaol on this occasion, although this is his third offence. I realise that his driver’s license must go, not probably for ever, and that a substantial fine must be imposed.” “I don’t want to send a man of fifty to gaol, but all the same this is his third offence, and he is lucky that he does not get a month,” said Mr. Hunt, S.M. Deeley was fined £lOO or three months' Imprisonment, and his license to drive a motor-car was cancelled for five years. He was allowed until Monday to pay.
