WOMAN STOPS A FILM

PROTEST AGAINST BATHING GIRLS. “I do not approve of this nakedness. Here I am, and here I stay. I challenge you to take a picture now I am here.” With this protest, a frail old woman, carrying an enormous umbrella, planted herself in the midst of a laughing group of bathing, girls who were about to be filmed by the British Movietone News in front of a Paignton hotel. “But, madam, you’re spoiling the picture,” protested the operator. “That; sir, is precisely my intention —as a protest against indecency,” replied the woman, who was Mrs. Macaulay, one of the most influential residents of Paignton. Her brother is a local magistrate. The occasion was the first of a weekly series of visits to the “English Riviera” of girls from Captain S. F. Welsh’s Mayfair Gymnasium, under whose charge many society women take slimming and other exercises. “We aye just rounding off a week’s hard work in the gymnasium by outdoor games and surf-riding,” protested Captain Welsh, “and surely you cannot grudge sunlight to these girls.” “I like to see my sex decently clad." retorted Mrs. Macaulay. .“And here I shall stand as long as I see fit.” By this time a large crowd had gathered and argument became general. But nothing could move Mrs. Macaulay—not even the entreaties of the bathing girls themselves. When the bathing girls had retreated to the beach with the film untaken, Mrs. Macaulay left to lodge a protest with the authorities.—“ Sunday Dispatch.”
