Cargill) surveyed the work of the past year and dealt with the probable developments in the industry, his conjectures being based on the movements in the printing trade in New Zealand over the last decade, and on the experiences of master printers in some of the older countries. He referred to the work of the special committee which had prepared and issued “Usages of the Printing Trade” and had brought forward a report on a system of costfinding suitable for universal adoption. The publication had been well received in all quarters and already many members were anticipating with enthusiasm details of the costing system. ' Dealing with importations and their relation to the unemployment question, Mr. Cargill indicated the huge volume of upwards of £BOO.OOO worth of printed matter brought from overseas annually. Of this total, goods to the value of £400.000 to £500,000 were suited to production within the Dominion, and if more practical support of the local industry were accorded by those now importing. a very large number of additional workmen could be absorbed by the industry, he said. Opportunity was taken to bid farewell to Mr. H. J. Bushnell, who was retiring after having been engaged in the printing trade for 68 years. Tlie meeting placed on record the valuable services of Mr. Bushnell to his fellow printers of Gisborne and to the federation.
