WELLINGTON DEFEATS MARTINBOROUGH

HIGH-STANDARD PLAY A friendly match between the Martinborough Club aud the Wellington Club was played at the latter club’s courts, Palmer Street, on Sunday. Wellington proved victorious, but the resulting score, twenty rubbers to three, did not give a real indication of the teams’ respective merits. The standard of play was high and the majority of the games evenly contested. The visitors were the guests of the club at a luncheon held at Barrett’s Hotel. Afternoon tea was dispensed by Mrs. F. O. Austin. The visitors expressed their satisfaction with the general condition of the. courts, which had recently been surfaced again. The following are the results in detail :— Men’s Singles.—E. A. WELLINGTON NOMADS- v., CARTERTON Mr. W. J. Melody’s team of Nomads, comprising 1C men and nine ladies from tliirteeu city and suburban clubs, paid their

fourth annual visit to Carterton on Saturdav last, and after a strenuous and enjoyable series of games, succeeded in defeating the premier club of the Wairarapa by -7 rubbers to 12, this avenging their defeat last year at the hands of Carterton.
