GLADSTONE AND INCOME TAX
Sir. —In my letter in your issue of even date, I stated that the late AV. E. Gladstone introduced the income tax. This is only partially correct, as Mr. Gladstone in 1842 was only vice-president of the Board of Trade in Sir Robert, Peel’s Administration, when the income, or war tax. was revived. Mr. Gladstone. I should have stated, was an ardent supporter of its reintroduetion. The income tax as we understand it to-day was declared a permanent tax by the Liberal Government during 1907.—1 am. etc.. ■Wellington. March 6.
