An old Wanganui resident, recalling the early days, remarked the other day that very little iron was used on roofs of houses and sheds, and that the roofing was mostly done with shingles. The splitting of these found profitable employment for many people. He said he was engaged on one occasion splitting shingles at Long Acre, and a woman. Mrs. Tom Brown, was also employed on similar work in the locality, with men to place the timber in position for her. She had no difficulty in splitting 2000 shingles a day.
