SCHOOLS AND CLINICS

OPENED IN CARTERTON Carterton, February 24. The Central Infant School in Holloway Street, Carterton, together with the dental clinic adjunct, was officially opened this afternoon by the Hon. H. Atmore, Minister of Education. The agitation for an infant school in a more central position was started as far back as 1922, and in 1924 a carnival was organised, which provided sufficient funds to acquire a large section which was given to the Education Board as a school site. Through the efforts of the Hon. A. D. McLeod, a grant was ob-. tained from the Education Department for the building, which was. subsequently reduced by deleting the Provision for a teachers’ room. Colonel T. W. McDonald, M.P. for Wairarapa, was successful in having this reinstated before, the building was erected. The dental clinic is one of the standard type, toward the cost of which the residents provided £lOO at the gathering this afternoon. * . The speakers were the chairman of the committee (Mr. G. E. Jones), Colonel McDonald. M.P., Mr. J. Donald (a Wairarapa representative on the Education Board), the Mayor (Mr. W. Fisher), and the Minister of Education. Hie district was complimented on having a live committee and the Education Popartment upon providing such fine buildings for primary education. The Minister was later shown over the main school buildings at the southern end of the town. VISITS TO OTHER CENTRES Masterton, February 24. The Minister was met upon arrival at Featherston. He addressed the assembled school children and officially opened the new dental clinic and manual and technical buildings. , c The Ministerial party then left for Martinborough. The new secondary department and dental clinic were officially opened. After receiving a deputation the Minister was entertained at luncheon by the, Mayor (Mr. F. Martin), and councillors and members of the local school committee.

Eariy in the afternoon the Minister reached Greytown, where he officially opened additions to the school and the new dental clinic.

After a similar ceremony at Carterton the Minister visited the Carterton Catholic hostel, afterwards being entertained

at tea. To-morrow he will visit vrious Mastertoil schools, including the; High School and Technical School, and i scheduled to speak at the Optimists Club luncheon on Wednesday. lie will leave then for Eketaliunn, where he willopen additions to the High .School, proebding to Hawke's Buy. It is anticipated that the present tour will occupy .the gtater part of a week.
