WHIRLWIND AT SUVA
DAMAGE ON WATERFRONT ENGINEER DROWNED (Rec. February 24, 12.30 a.m.) Suva, February 23, A whirlwind from the north-east struck Suva at 5.30 p.m. yesterday. Along the waterfront the wind blew at the rate of 120 miles per hour. The chief damage was suffered by Terry and Son, boatbuilders. A public works-man and a boy were slightly injured. The Helena, a schooner belonging to Terry and Son, on the slip undergoing repairs as a result of the recent hurricane, was lifted up five feet and landed clear of the slip at an angle of 45 degrees. Small craft were thrown 50 yards. The estimated damage to the Shell Oil stores is £4OO. Mr. W. C. Mady, aged 45, third engineer of the Makatea, was found drowned in Nabukulou creek in the centre of the tbwn to-night. He was a native of Scotland.
