0 WATERLINE AND SILVER COOT WIN AT RICCARTON CHARMAINE BEATS ASPIRING IN MIDDLE PARK PLATE DARGAVILLE CUP TO KING WILLONYX Racing in the Dominion on Saturday was in progress at Dargaville and Riccarton. At Dargaville the Cup was won by King Wilonyx In the south the Midsummer Handicap was won by Materline, and the Craven Plate by Silver Coot. In the Middle Park Plate n mistake by the rider of Aspiring in connection with the correct finishing post cost her the race, which was won by Charinaine.

C.J.C. MEETING MIDSUMMER HANDICAP TQ WATERLINE CRAVEN PLATE TO SILVER COOT Dominion Special Service. Cliristchureh, February 22. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting was held to-day. The weather was fine with a strong wind. JLhe attendance was fair, and the course in fast order. The tot’alisator investments amounted to £21,035/10/-, compared with £20,495 last year.. HORNBY HANDICAP. J Tourist was the only withdrawal for the Hornby Handicap, for which Marsham was made favourite, in a fairly well distributed pool. The field got away on good terms, but were soon spread out, Gala Day and Haze rushing away with the lead after a furlong had been covered, and at the far turn they were racing abreast well clear of Marsha'm, Chickwheat, Phastar, Hounslow, and Roi de A 7 al. ’ Gala Day . had a slight advantage from Haze entering the straight, with Marsham making up leeway. The last-named took charge at the distance and drew away to win with ease by over three lengths from Quarterdeck, who did not put iu au appearance until well down the straight, but finished with a burst to beat Chickwheat by a length for second money. Hounslow was close up next, and then came Phastar, Don Jose, Haze, Gala Day, and Wrigley, with Roi de Vai tailed off. TRIAL STAKES. The trial stakes looked very open on paper, but investors showed good judgment in bestowing most support on the two dividend payers. When the field settled down Solgele assumed command from Tariff, Flair, Fair Exchange, Swittray, and Gay Crest, but the leader surrendered his place to Tariff at the straight entrance, and the latter was momentarily in charge when headed for home. Inside the distance, however, Flair shot out, and soon had the race in hand, going on to win without any pressure whatever by two lengths from Gay Crest, who worried Fair Exchange out of second honours m the last few strides. Swiftray was a little over a length away next, and was followed by Tariff, Tourist, and Audiecnee, with the remainder spread out. Flair outclassed the held in the run home, and was easing up at the post. - Gay Crest did good work in the straight, while Fair Exchange ran up to recent track form, but failed over the last fifty yards. Swiftray was expected to do better, but never looked like a winner. Tourist had every chance, being up near the leaders throughout. The West Coast candidate, Ravine, was strongly fancied, but lost his chance by failing to move off on terms. Miss Nightraid. Flaxbird, and Safety also suffered when the barrier was released. ’ ‘ MIDDLE PARK PLATE. Rosy Morn and Coroner were withdrawn from the Middle Park Plate, and in a fairly even pool the two-year-old Charinaine was made a. better favourite than Aspiring, and they fought out the finish, Charmaine was the first to show ■out, and led on to the course proper from Aspiring, Blue Metal, and Inevitable, with Jaloux in close attendance. Aspiring drew up to Charmaine at the distance, and the pair engaged in a neek-and-neck tussle. Aspiring a winner at the old post, and her rider eased up on her, under the impression that the race was over. He realised his mistake too late, as, although Aspiring responded again, Charmaine was able to gain a neck victory. Jaloux finished the best of the remainder to beat Blue Metal for third money three lengths away, and then came Inevitable and Tarquinius, with Semper Paratus last. . 14., Charmaine was lucky to win, but at the same time she showed marked stamina, as she was under punishment oyer the last furlong. The remainder of the field were outclassed. MIDSUMMER HANDICAP. The six acceptors paraded for the Midsummer Handicap, Pride being installed a much better favourite than Waterline. Rapier was the first to show out, and led along the back stretch from Topere, Pride, Hoylake, and Waterline. Rapier, under a strong pull, was still in front turning into the straight, but retired at the distance. The field bunched at thp distance with Topere in charge, racing slightly in front of Waterline, Hoylake and Pride. Topere then weakened, and Waterline, drawing out, was immediately challenged by Hoylake. In a hard finish Waterline always had Hoylake’s measure, and beat him to the post by a neck. Topere was two lengths away with a similar gap to Pride, who was clear of Amor, with Rapier last. The w’inner registered an attractive performance, as he came from the back founding the top turn and was in behind the leaders turning for home. Hoylake allowed a big improvement on Dunedin form, and looked dangerous at the distance, but he did not finish on as well as might have been desired. Topere failed unexpectedly when in a promising position half way down the running. Pride had every chance, but lacked a finishing effort. There was very little pace on over the first six furlongs, which accounted for Rapier’s making play for so long. 'The speed was not increased until the far turn, the last half-mile being covered in 49sec. LYTTELTON PLATE!. Praise, bracketed with Ozone, was solidly supported for the Lyttelton Plate, but after getting away well she failed to justify her position at any stage. The start was a good one. Eaton Hall being

the slowest to move off. Spoon on the outside berth hopped out smartly and in. less than a furlong had gained the position on the rails, leading on to the course proper from Winsome Hind, and Weatherly. Spoon streaked away in the run home to win by three lengths from Winsome Hind, -who was two lengths in front of Ozone, with Praise half a length back. Appeal, Whatnot and Pharaoh were next. The winner showed a great turn of speed and she had the field in trouble from the jump out. The time, Irnin. Isec., was fast against a strong head wind throughout the race. Winsome Hind was again consistent, but not good enough. There was no excuse for Praise, as she gave no trouble at the start and left the barrier on equitable terms. CRAVEN PLATE. The withdrawal of Rapier, Pride, Dutch Money, and El Boa left a one-divi-dend field for the Craven Plate, and Red Heckle was voted a short-priced proposition. He occupied the rear position until ' the straight was reached and then settled down to overhaul Silver Coot, who had acted as pacemaker from the start. Red Heckle appeared to be holding Silver Coot safe when he drew up to him at the distance, but the latter executed some surprisingly good work over the business stages, and stayed on to beat the favourite in an exciting finish by a neck. Arrowmir, who failed to show any of his track brilliance, was four lengths back, a length in front of Greenaway. \ Silver Coot impressed by his end-to-end victory, and stayed on better than his six furlong efforts at the Dunedin meeting suggested. This was Red Heckle’s first race for some time, a fact that contributed to his failure to complete his task as satisfactorily as was expected. Both Arrowmir and Greenaway made poor showings, the latter especially. HALSWELL HANDICAP. The Halswell Handicap was responsible for the decisive defeat of the favourite, Te Awhina, by an outsider in Noteworthy, a stable mate of Silver Coot. Te Awhina raised the hopes of her supporters when she had a substantial lead from Leader, Quinopal, Starshooter, Sunny Pal, Mount Boa, and Ranelagh, but Noteworthy, who was well back at the end of two furlongs, appeared on the scene inside the distance, and, finishing on with a burst of speed, collared To Awhina fifty yards from the post, and beat her in an easy manner by three lengths. Mount. Boa was a length away, in front of Quinopal, Starshooter, Ranelagh, and Greyfinch. Noteworthy with a clear’ run on the outside smothered the field in the hist furlong and paid the biggest price of the day. Te Awhina was not disgraced under her solid weight. ' POST HANDICAP. The concluding event, the Post Handicap, was productive of a typical performance on the part , of Full Feather, who tailed the field from the start and was the last to enter the straight. Gay Crest and Courtlike were the early leaders, and were together well in front of Master Clarence and Buoyant when turned for home. Courtlike had had enough at the distance, and Gay Crest appeared to be a wiliner. Full Feather then put in his claim and joined Gay Crest. The latter repeated his Dunedin tactics of boring out, and although appearing to mar Full Feather’s progress the Chokebore colt wore him down to beat him by a neck. The Bailiff, who was always within reach of the leaders, was three-quarters of a length away a neck in front of Master Clarence. Chickwheat. Sea Raid. Buoyant, Meprisant, and Courtlike finished in that order. DETAILS OF THE RACING By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, February 22. HORNBY HANDICAP, of 200 sovs. Nine furlongs. 1 F. D. NOTES AND COMMENTS (By "The Watcher.") Acceptances for the first day's events at the annual meeting of the Rangitikei Racing Club, to be held on March 5 and 6, will close on Saturday next at 9 p.m. Noteworthy, who paid a very substantial dividend at Riccarton on Saturday, raa a fair race at Awapunl on Boxing Day, finishing fourth to Head Serang, Accra, and Blue Paper. Southern critics picked Waterline turn out one of the best that the Chokebore stables here sheltered for some time. He finished very solidly at Riccarton oi Saturday and promises to make the St. Leger interesting. Red Heckle ran an excellent race on Saturday at Riccarton, his first for three months. Red Heckle is engaged at Trentham. In the field that Full Feather had to meet at Riccarton on Saturday he would have been, made favourite had the race been run at Trantham. Riccarton racegoers let him go out fifth choice. Gay Crest had two tries on Saturday at Riccarton, and ran second each time. A coincidence was that he paid the same dividend on both occasions. Mr. G. D. Greenwood’s horses failed te pay a dividend on Saturday. The apprentice jockey K. Voitre, whe broke both arms at the Taranaki meeting, is still in New Plymouth hospital. He is progressing very satisfactorily, and is expected to be out of hospital next week. The. Walrarapa Racing Club has decided to Increase the stakes for the Easter meeting by £6O. The distance of the big race lias been slightly reduced. A. McAulay has been bustling the two-year-old Knockany along lately to get an idea about his galloping ability. Though not a brilliant beginner, on anything he has shown so far, he stays on well in his work. It is possible that the Nightraid colt will accompany Nightmarch and Trut Shaft to Sydney. Arlkiwai has come on nicely in his work lately, and as he appears to be quite sound he may do well in the autumn. The Banks Peninsula meeting next Saturday should provide a line to his prospects. The Elderslie Stud. The Elderslie stud is to be converted into a private company of about forty shareholders, half of whom will be Australian breeders, says the Dunedin writer “Sentinel.” It is understood that in the event of the idea coming to fruition, an option on Chief Ruler will be exercised. Mr. J. Donald’s stud may come under the hammer at the end of the season, and hence the reason for Chief Ruler coming into the market, Mr. T. Handley, who stands unrivalled as a studmaster, may come back from England to resume control of the Elderslie stud. Under the proposed conditions North Otago would receive a tremendous boost as a nursery for the thoroughbred, and there is no doubt that unlimited possibilities exist in connection with the scheme. All the greatest authorities of the past and present reebgnise that limestone country is the ideal ground for breeding thoroughbreds, and in this respect sportsmen who have travelled the world regards Elderslie as excelling some of the best producing studs in England as a favourable place for breeding winners. Wellington Nominations. The two-year-old King Musket, by Shambles from Hornbeam, figures among the nominations for the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting. He showed some promise in the spring, when trained at Riccarton, but recently his'owner transferred him to H. B. Lorigan’s stables at Trantham. He may not be ready to show his best form next month, but if he trains on he may be sent to Australia in tho spring.
