WEEK-END YACHTING

EVANS BAY RACES KIO II WINS CENTRE-BOARD EVENT 'Some splendid yachting, particularly in the centre-board class, was witnessed at Evans Bay on Saturday. In the early part of the afternoon the racing conditions were ideal. A light southerly was blowing, which unfortunately dropped later to almost a flat calm. Although this did not affect the centre-boards greatly, the keelers, which were racing over a different course, were considerably delayed, those in the rear positions not getting back to the finishing line off the Evans Bay Yachting Club’s shed until late. In the first and second class centreboarders’ event for the Patron’s Challenge Cup, Kio II sailed a great race, getting across the line 2min. 15sec. ahead of Lauchlan’s Jewel, which sailed second. An interesting competitor in this race was Betty, the well-known Sander’s Cup boat, which was recently purchased in Auckland by Messrs. W. H. and C. V. Wagstaff. Saturday was the first occasion on which she had been raced in M ellington, and indeed, with the exception of a short spin on the harbour the other evening, tlie first time that she had been sailed here at all. Under the severe handicap of being a strange boat to her crew, she sailed into ninth place, off scratch. The other event of the afternoon was the race between the keel yachts for the Smith Memorial Challenge, Cup. The course was from the starting line off the clubhouse to Somes Rock buoy to Coromandel' buoy, outside Jerningham to the finishing line, off the clubhouse. In this race Marangi crossed the finishing line well ahead of the other boats. Wairere II was second home 16min. 26se.c. later. There was then practically a flat calm which spoilt the chances of the other, boats winning on corrected times. The detailed results of the events are given below, the placings, handicaps, finishing and corrected times being stated in each case: — CENTRE-BOARDS. FIRST AND SECOND CLASS. (Patrons’ Challenge Cup.) Kio II (Imim), 4hrs. 9min. 54sec., 4hrs. Sniin. 54sec., 1 Lauchlan’s Jewel (3min.), 4hrs. 12 min. 9sec., 4hrs. 9min. 9sec. .. 2 Wellesley II (3Jmin.), 4hrs. 13min. 58sec., 4hrs. lOmin. 28sec 3 Nancy (2min.), 4hrs. 12min. 33sec., 4hrs. lOmin. 33sec 4 Little Haste (3Jmin.), 4hrs. 14min. 17sec., 4hrs. lOmins. 47sec 5 Tui (16min.), 4hrs. 27min. 14sec., 4hrs llniin. 14sec “ Southern Maid (Simin.), 4hr. 15min. 35sec., 4hr. 12min. ssec 7 From a spectacular start at 3.10 p.m. Betty took the lead and left the other boats at the first buoy in a bunch. Four boats then left the others, and together soon began to decrease the lead obtained by Bettv. Kio II forged ahead, drew level with Betty, and passed her, the others doing likewise. Kio II and Lauchlan’s Jewel were now making the race. Despite a bad start Clyde was not far behind. The remainder of the race was a tussle between Kio 11, Lauchlan’s Jewel, Betty and Nancy. At the slip buoy at the finish of the last round, the order was the same. Kio II was well ahead with the second, third, and fourth boats evenly spaced apart. Lauchlan’s Jewel lost some distance on the turn and might have been beaten for second place hail not Clyde failed to finish. It was ascertained that she had struck a buoy in the first round and was thus disqualified. On corrected time Kio II was declared the winner. KEEL YACHTS. (Smith Memorial Challenge Cup.) Marangi (scr.), 4hr. 48min. 42sec., 4hr. 48min. 42sec 1 Wairere II (15min.), shr. smin. 8 sec., 4hr. 50min. Ssec - Viola (7min.), shr. 7miq. 28sec., shr. Omin. 28sec • ° Wairere I (20min.), shr. 33niin. 42 sec., shr. 13min. 42sec 4 Tlie keel yachts were dispatched at 3 p.m. All got away with a good start, but before long ’Marangi began to draw ahead. About half a mile off Somes Island. Marangi shook out a reef. At the island the position. was Marangi, Viola, Wairere 11. Wairere I, Galatea, and Rawene? On the beat oyer to Coromandel, the wind began to lighten, and the boats spread out. The position at Coromandel were the same. On the beat up from Coromandel ’to the finishing Dne, Wairere II made a good manoeuvre by putting about in the centre of the bay. and by getting a sood lift un, outsailed Viola to the’ finishing line. However. Marangi, through obtaining a substantial lead, was not displaced for first place on corrected times. She crossed the line IGniin. 26sec. ahead of Wairere 11. At this stage the breeze dropped to practically a flat calm, and so spoilt the other boats’ chances of winning on corrected times. FORSTER CUP Melbourne, February 22. The second heat of the 1' orstcr Cup was won by Tussle HI, from N.S.W. HI.
