LARGE SHARK CAUGHT FROM DINGHY
FISHERMEN’S ENEMY REMOVED. Dominion Special Service Auckland. February 1. A species of ground shark, 9 feet 10 inches long, and weighing 3841 b., was caught by two Aucklanders, Messrs. C. F. Fowkler and E. T. Marshall, from a small boat at Island Bay, Birkdale, yesterday afternoon. A well known fishing ground in the bay had been deserted for over a week, and the two fishermen came to the conclusion that it was a shark that was driving the sehnapper away, so they set out to hook it. To a heavy piece of rope they fastened an ertipty kerosene tin made airtight to act, as a float, and they went out in a 14-foot dinghy to the fishing ground. They used a big shark hook, with a trace of brass chain baited with half a large kahawai, which the shark seized the moment it had sunk out of sight. The big fish fought hard tor an hour, but was gradually driven shoreward. having the very buoyant kerosene tin to contend with. Running the dinghy aground, the men carried the line up the beach, and then quickly despatched the shark.
