FOREBODING OF FIRE

BLAZE AT PALMERSTON Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, February 2. Suddenly conscious of the fact that he had left a naked candle burning in his house when he heard the screech of the syren at 12.44 this morning, a Palmerton North resident followed in the wake ot the fire engines, only to have his worst fears confirmed. Mr. E. M. Rossiter, who occupies a seven-roomed house owned by Mr. H. Pitcher in Church Street East, lejt home in the early evening to meet his wife, who he expected to arrive back at Palmerston by train. There was no sign of her, however, so ■ Mr. Rossiter decided to spend the evening at the pictures. When he came out of the theatre at the end of the programme he found that his bicycle had disappeared while he was inside. It was while he was strolling around the streets in the hope of being able to the machine that the syren went, recalling vividly to his memory that he had left the unoccupied house with a lighted candle in it. Seeing the fire engines setting off in the direction of Church Street he' followed them, his worst forebodings being, realised when he reached there.’ ' . ' The house was practically gutted, and when the brigade arrived the roof had already fallen in. The contents of the house were not insured. Damage io Outhouses. Slight damage was caused to outhouses at the Princess Hotel, Main Street, Ter-race-End, by a fire which broke out early .this morning. The Palmerston North Fire Brigade received the alarm at 3.31 a.m., and suppressed the outbreak without difficulty. - 1 . • ....
