WEEK-END YACHTING

EVANS BAY RACES MARANGI WINS LONGDISTANCE EVENT Favoured with excellent weather, some splendid yachting was witnessed at Evans Bay during the week-end. On Saturday afternoon there was a strong breeze from the - south-west,- which gave the crews of the 14 foot and under boats ample scope for displaying their qualities of seamanship. , . In the first-class cOntre-boarders event the Little Haste sailed a great race, and throughout was very closely followed by Kio 11, but she. managed to cross the line with 16 seconds to spare. Viola was again successful in registering a win in the keel yachts’ race, with Galatea second. A most interesting event was the longdistance race for keel yachts, which commenced from Evans Bay yesterday morning. Starting at 10.15 a.m., the boats proceeded down the bay, around Somes Island, thence out of the Heads to a mark boat in Island Bay, and then back over the same route home. There was a light easterly breeze in the morning, which later gave place to a nor’-westerly, and the sea was very smooth. As usual, the Marangi was first home, and corrected times gave her premier position, showing that in a course of sufficient length she is able to work off her handicap. Wairere I, to which the Marangi had givene 43min., was placed a very close second. The.detailed results of the events are given below, the placings, finishing and corrected times being stated in each case:—

On the lead to Coromandel Buoy the first four yachts were Marangi, Viola, Wairere II and Galatea, these positions being unaltered when the boats crossed the finishing line. On corrected times, however, Marangi was relegated to last place, the handicaps given to the other boats proving too solid for her. Viola, by taking first place, added still another win to her credit for the year. The second and third places went to Galatea and Rawene respectively. The course, a triangular one, was set from the clubhouse to the Somes Rock Buoy, thence to the Coromandel Buoy, past Point Jerningham, back to Evans Bay. CENTRE-BOARDS, FIRST CLASS. '. The five entrants got hway to a good start at 10.15 a.m., Marangi going into the lead, followed by Wairere I and Viola. Towards the head of the bay Viola was able to overtake Wairere. These positions were unaltered on rounding Somes Island. From here to the entrance the wind was very patchy and freshened slightly, Marangi establishing a good lead. On reaching Island Bay after a good run from the Heads, the wind headed the boats slightly, and they had to beat up to the mark boat. The order was Marangi, Viola, Wairere I, and at good intervals apart Galatea and Rawene. On the way back Wairere passed Viola, and off Island Bay the wind veered round to the north-west. Coming through the Heads there was a very steady breeze, and Marangi substantially increased her lead. On the final lan down Evans Bay Marangi and Wairere I set their spinnakers, Viola carrying her leader. In spite of the 43min. handicap conceded to Wairere I, : Marangi just managed to secure first place by 58sec. Throughout the race the boats were all able to carry their topsails.
