THE SANDERS CUP
TROPHY WON BY OTAGO GOOD JUDGMENT BY WINNER Dominion Special Service. Auckland, January 31. The Otago boat Eileen well deserved its win in the fourth race for the Sanders Cup, which secured for it the trophy. The Otago skipper again sailed a welljudged race from start to finish, especially in the first round. .. When the boats hauled on the wind Avalon had a lead of 17sec. from Clyde and 21sec. from Eileen. Clyde stood across the harbour, the other three boats standing up the middle of the harbour. Clyde appeared to be doing very well, mid Avalon left Eileen and Colleen and went after Clyde. This move was a most unwise one and resulted in Avalon s falling from first to last position. Eileen and Colleen were able to lay tbeir mark at the tide deflector, but Clyde and Avalon stood to windward so far that they had to ease sheets to make the mark. Clyde was now beating Avalon, but at the tide deflector Avalon passed Clyde, and at the King’s Wharf was holding second position, having meanwhile overtaken Colleen. From now onwards the contest was between Eileen and Avalon, and while Eileen did better than Avalon off wind, the Auckland boat always improved her position on the wind. Although at times Avalon was almost two minutes behind Eileen, the Auckland boat finally reduced the lead to 29sec. at the finishing line. , All boats with the exception of Eileen carried a crew of four. Eileen having only three men on board. This proved a great advantage throughout, as the wind was only n three men breeze, lhe victory was greeted with enthusiasm.
