WELLINGTON’S BIG INCREASE PETROL TAX UP; TIRES DOWN The Customs revenue figures for January at Wellington show that the Increase of imports which was so marked during last year still continues. The net Customs revenue last month was £277,486, as against £248,807 for January, 1929, an increase of £28,679. For the ten months of the current financial year the revenue was £2,687,037 compared with £2,297,702 for the corresponding period of 1928-29, an increase of £389,245. The duty collected on motor spirit last month was £37,067/7/- as against £40,961/6/8 for January, 1929, a drop of nearly £4OOO. The figures for the 10 months periods are £315,057 and £300,220 respectively, an increase of £15,000. Collections of tire tax last month totalled £4223/13/-, compared with £7561 for the same month last year, showing a fall of £3338. For the ten months a drop of £10,245 is recorded, the figures being £42,334 and £52,579 respectively. Beer excise collections for January were £4013/18/10 as against £4017/16/7 for January, 1929. For the ten months the figures are £45,812 and £43,801, an increase of £2Oll being recorded. DECREASES REVEALED AT CHRISTCHURCH. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, January 31. Decreases in Customs duties, beer duty and motor spirit tax are features of the January Customs returns. Net Customs revenue from January was £100,045, and for January, 1929, £106,419. Beer duty for January was £7057, compared 'with £7584 for January, 1929. Motor spirit tax for January was £13,758, as against £14,824 in the previous January. Tire duty for the month was £1704, and in January, 1929, it was £1535. WANGANUI FIGURES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wqnganui, January 31. Wanganui Customs revenue totalled £63,407 for January. Customs returns for January show an increase over those of the same period of last year except in the case of beer duty, which shows a decrease of about £4500. There is an increase of £6OOO in Customs duty and an increase of about £4500 in motor-spirit tax. Tire tax has also shown an increase of over £4OOO.
