WELLINGTON’S FIRST ’PLANE
TO ARRIVE TO-DAY At 2 o’clock this afternoon the Simmonds Spartan aeroplane, which is the first machine of the Wellington Aero Club, is expected to arrive at Rongotai Airport, from Wigram Aerodrome, where it has been assembled. The machine was tested yesterday morning, and with the exception of an adjustment of a wing, was found to be excellent. This alteration was made, and there will be a final test before the machine leaves Christchurch. The actual time of departure will depend upon the weather. Under normal conditions the machine will leave the aerodrome at Sockburn at 11 a.m., and will come directly to Wellington. But, should a following wind prevail, the ’plane will not leave until such time as would enable it to land at Rongotai at 2 p.m. The club’s instructor, Captain G. L. Stedman, will be the pilot, and he will have a member of the committee, Mr. G. Wallace, as the passenger. A parcel of art union ticket butts from the South Island will be among the luggage. After the arrival, the aeroplane will be christened by Mrs. Blundell.
