SPINSTERS FOR LIFE
HULL’S “NEVER-NEVER” CLUB. Twenty young women at Hull, England, who have sworn never to marry, formed themselves into the “Never-Never-Club,” the one and only rule of which is that they shall- remain spinsters until the end,of their days! The inaugural meeting was held at the house of one of the members. It began with tea and cakes and ended with an impromptu dance at which no males were present. “You mav think we. are joking, said Miss May‘Gridley, the founder and secretary in an interview, but we are in deadly earnest. Don’t think that we are man-haters, or soured spinsters, or have been crossed in love. Not a bit of it.” Miss Gridley explained that all the members were in good positions, selfsupporting and likely to continue so, and they were of the opinion that by marrying- they would be robbing do-mestically-inclined girls of their chance of happiness. “After all,”- she said, “there are something like two million surplus women. It is the duty of those of us who can fend for ourselves not to marry. “Our membership includes confidential secretaries and clerks, buyers, a traveller, typists and so on. All are earning good money, and are competent enough to be almost certain of regular jobs with the opportunity of putting away for a rainy day.” “And if a member fails in love?” • Miss Gridley smiled. “That will be ou? business,” she said, .
