SUMMER FLOWERS

NORTHLAND SHOW The Mavor (Mr. G. A. Troup) opened the annual horticultural summer show at St Anne’s, Northland. He was accomnanied by Mrs. Troup, who was presented with a posy by little Louie Honsa. Mr. Troup congratulated the society on Its beautiful display, and spoke interestingly on the influence of horticulture on architecture in both ancient and modern times. The outstanding feature of the show was undoubtedly the exhibition of gladioli! \niong so many gorgeous blooms it was a difficult matter to choose a champion, but the judge finally selected Mr. H. E. Edwards’s “Hinemoa” for the honour. Mr. B Sutherland’s beautiful pot plants and cut flowers were artistically displayed by Mr G. I'earn, and added greatly to the tasteful appearance of the hall. The prize winners were as follow: — Gladioli: H. E. Edwards, 1, first and champion bloom; W. Steer, eleven firsts, six seconds; G. Eearn, two seconds; Mrs. Cameron, one first. . Novice class: Mrs. Bernech, one_ first, three seconds, one h.c.; Mrs. Von Heisenberg, three firsts; T. B. Thomson, one secO "carnations: E. W. Purdie, five firsts, six seconds; H. Knight, one first; Mrs. J. J. Furlong, one second; B. J. Weir, one first. Sweet peas: G. S. Nicoll, seven firsts, five seconds. Cut flowers: L. Corkhill, ten firsts, seven seconds; B. Sutherland, four firsts, two seconds, and special award of merit; H. Knight, two firsts, one second; Miss Old-bury-Jones, one second; T. Robinson, one second; Mrs. Furlong, three firsts, two seconds; Mrs. G. S. Nicoll, one second; Mrs. Bernech, one first. Vegetables: G. McDonald, two firsts, one second; S. Boyes, one h.c. Drawing: Master Furlong, one first, one second; Miss J. Lambert, one first, one second. Children’s section: Louie Honsa, two firsts; Molly Trigger, one second, one h.c.; A. Harrison, one second, one h.c.: B. Sotham, two firsts, one second; M. Flemming, one first; Pat Sotham, one first, one second, one h.c. Mr. L. Corkhill gained 21 points in the pansy and viola classes and won outright the president's trophy. Mr. W. Brown’s trophy for most points in the gladioli section was won by Mr. W. Steer, of Miramar, the last holder, who has generously re-donated it to the society. Mt. W. Platt’s trophy was won by Mrs. Von Kelsenberg for moAt points in the domestic section, and Mrs. Bernech gained Mr. Geo. Fearn's teaset for most points In the gladioli class. The judges for the show were:—Mr. J. G. MacKenzie, cut flowers and pot plants; Mr. F. Smith, vegetables-; Mrs. L. Boyes, domestic; and Mrs. Porter, needlework and decorative. During the afternoon and evening musical items were greatly enjoyed through the medium of a Panatrope, kindly loaned by Messrs. Pinny and Co.
