POSITION AT GISBORNE By Telegraph.—Press Association. Gisborne, January 30. As a sequel to several deputations waiting on him, the Alayor of Gisborne, Air. D. W. Coleman, telegraphed to the Minister of Public Works stating that approximately 150 men were out of work in the town, and asked the Alinister to authorise the placing of additional men on railway works. To-day the Mayor received a reply that the Minister would look into the position immediately and advise at the earliest possible Ante. In consequence of reports to him to-day the Mayor has written the Alinister stating it is reported that 17 men arrived here yesterday, from Rotorua, and were being transported to the railway works. The Alayor, commenting to the Minister, dated that this was very unfair to local men. From inquiries made by a reporter today it is understood these men were sent to railway works from the Auckland Labour Bureau In an effort to alleviate unemployment in the northern centre. Another gang of 15 men, also from Auckland, it is understood, arrived at the Waikokopu end of the railway on the previous day. All members of both these gangs are single men.
