CANADIAN VISITORS

The nine lady members of ,tbe visiting Canadian bowling party were the guests at a reception held at the Canterbury Women’s Club, Christchurch. M r . s - '*• A. Flesher, in welcoming the visitors, said : “We look upon you, not as strangers, but as sisters, for our parents or grandparents came from the same Motherland, we are the same colour, we speak the same language, we play the same games, and we honour the same King. Mrs. McPherson, who replied on behalf of the visitors, said though they had not had a great deal of sunshine in the Dominion, they were consoled by hearing that the winter was particularly severe in Canada, and that the snow was so deep in Ontario that transport was seriously hampered. Speaking of women’s organisations in Canada, she said that in Toronto they had the Canadian Women’s Club, Women’s Art Association, Press Women’s Club. Business M omen’s Club, Council of Women, local branches- of the W.C.T.U., and the Women’s Institute, a fine organisation in the rural districts, which, working with a Government subsidy, arranged lectures on cookery, home science, ' home nursing, and kindred subjects. Another society worthy of mention was the Home and School organisation by. which teachers and parents met and discussed pmns and problems for the betterment or the children. GARDEN PARTY Bv permission of the Prime Minister (Right Hon. Sir Joseph Ward), the Y.W.C.A. is to hold a garden party in the grounds of the Prime Minister s residence. 260 Tinakori Road, on Saturday next, at 3 p.m. Mrs. B. B. Wood has kindly lent her patronage to this function, which js in aid of the general funds of the association, and it is hoped that all friends and people interested in this women s work in the community will come along and heli) to make it a success. Afternoon *tea is included in the admission charge ot 2/6. A band will play during the afternoon. The green lawns and the gardens will prove a delightful setting, for a jiu jitsu display to be given by Miss Marion Todd and Miss Barbara Phear. This is something new to Wellington, and should prove a great attraction. Miss . Marion Todd will also gb’® ft demonstration of a group of health exercises “We have learnt by watching our cat.” Frieda Shaw will give a short explanation. Variops. sideshows have also been arranged, and a cake-stall where home-made cakes and delicacies can be procured. Provided the weather is fine, guests are promised an entertaining and enjoyable afternoon. In the event of the day being wet. a inception will be held in the A.W.C.A. Hall, 5 Boulcott Street, at 3 p.m. An entertaining programme will be arranged, so.that no one will be disappointed. A most enjoyable surprise party was held at Mrs. Robert Lilburn’s home. St. John’s Hill, on Wednesday evening, when dancing and bridge were the amusements for the evening. Among those were: Mesdames W. Low, D. L. Blyth, E. McDonald, Misses Murray (2), Low. D. Polson, J.
