NOTES ON THE EVENTS MISS MILLER’S EASY WIN < Dominion Special Service. Greymouth, January 26. Gordon Bridson, in the half mile men’s championship, was again in sterling form, and, onco lie had taken the lead, the Issue never appeared to be in doubt. No less than 38 yards separated him from the Canterbury star, A. T. F. Stokes, at the finish, and his time, llmin. 39 3-ssec., clipped five seconds oft D. P. Lindsay’s fresh water record. Bridson’s salt water record is llmin. 21 2-ssec. Stokes swam well up to form, but in Bridson he met a much superior swimmer, while he would knock seconds off his time if he could only turn better. , r . Another comfortable victory was Miss Kathleen Miller’s in the 220 yards ladies championship, which she won in the good time of 2min. 58sec., a matter of three seconds outside her Dominion record. The Wellington girl went out from the start, and only once, .when Miss Natalie Stratton, of Wanganui, came up alongside her did she took like being defeated. Miss Stratton however, could not maintain her effort., and left Miss Miller to win as she pleased from Miss M. Jepson (Otago), who swam very well considering that she has been an absentee from the sport for a year. L Moorhouse (Canterbury) has no peer as a backstroke artist in either Australia or New Zealand, and in the 150 yards championship he treated the spectators to a brilliant exhibition of this style- Ha won easily In lmin. 52sec., which is an Improvement of one.-flfth of a second on his salt water record, but 2 3-ssec. outside his best fresh water mark. In B. Kerr and S. Fogg Otago has two swimmers who should improve with more CX K rl j nC ßlakeley (Wellington) was last, some distance behind the pluce-getters. Few young swimmers promise to do so well in the sport as R. Geddes (Otago), who added another record to Ji.is list by winning the 50 yards junior breaststroke championship in 59 3-ssec., which lowers his own mark by 1 2-ssec. ■ A potential national distance champion is the Christchurch Intermediate champion, E. McConville who scored a clear-cut victory in the 440 yards championship from B. Gallate (Wellington) and J. Hattersby (Canterbury). JlcConville, who put up a new record'in the furlong race last night, swam strongly, but his time, (lmin. 6 4-oS6c„ was 5 3-sscsc. outside H. Gowans record of 6 mln. 1 l-ssec. Tho Auckland boy. R. Thomas, who is obviously a sprinter, finished in fourth place. Much improved form was shown by the Auckland water polo team, which had already beaten Otago and West Coast, in its match against. Wellington. The northerners won by two goals to one. a goal each being scored by Bridson' and Enwright, while Claridge netted Wellington’s only goal. Auckland’s team work . won the match, Enwrlght, Bridson, and Moore showing up the most of a hard-working side. The best players for the losers were Claridge. McHardy, and Blakeley. The Shields. The keenest Interest is Tielng taken in the competition for the Yaldhurst and War Memorial Shields. Present Indications are that Auckland will retain the senior shield, but it is almost certain to Jose the other to Otago. Points are as follow: —laldhurst. Shield: Canterbury, 19; Auckland, 16: Wellington, 11; Otago, 10. War Memorial Chield: Qtago, 5; Canterbury, 2; Auckland, 1.
