REOPENING OF INQUESTS

LEGISLATION NEXT SESSION * BEARING OF WALKER CASE ‘'MAY BE RETROSPECTIVE” The undertaking given by tM late Minister of Justice (Hon. T. M. Wilford) thto legislation would be introduced next session ' providing for the reopening of inquests is to be honoured by his successor in office, the Hon. Sir Thomas Sidey. This information was gathered yesterday by a “Dominion” representative who brought under the notice of' the new Minister of Justice a statement published locally that legislation would be presented to Parliament next session enabling the Elsie Walker inquest to be reopened. , .. “The most the Press has been authorised to publish,” said Sir Thomas, “is that I intend next session to introduce an amendment to the Coroners Act, somewhat on the lines of the English Act, to give power to reopen an inquest or to hold a fresh one.” x In reply to an inquiry as to whether the legislation proposed had a direct bearing on the Elsie Walker case, the Minister said: “I assume the legislation would be retrospective, 'but that point has not been submitted to Cabinet for its decision.”
