AGENT OF BOOKMAKER
“MUST PAY THE PENALTY”
John Walker, aged 56, was fined £2O, in default one month’s imprisonment, by Messrs. I. Salek and D. Keir, J.P.’s, in the Magistrate's Court on Saturday morning, on a charge of having carried on the business of a bookmaker. Detective-Sergeant Holmes stated that accused was only the agent of a bookmaker, but he had allowed himself to he held out as a person through whom bets could be made. The defendant, who, on being questioned by the police and confronted with certain evidence, frankly admitted the offence, had not been previously before the Court. m , Mr. C. H. Arndt, appearing for Walker, stated that his client had always borne an excellent character. In a sense he was taking punishment for his principal, because he was not the man who was drawing the profits. Defendant had only been doing a small amount of business. “Although he is not a bookmaker.” said Mr. Salek, in convicting accused, “Walker is the agent of one and has practically been carrying on the business. He knows it is against the law and as he has taken the risk he must pay the penalty.” Walker was allowed a week in which to pay his fine.
