Christmas at the rooms of the British Sailors’ Society was a tim6 of jollity and enjoyment for the large number of men from the various ships In port that were present. On Sunday a line number of men assembled for the sailors’ tea, presided over by Mrs. A. Brown and Miss Stone, and full justice was done to the good things provided. A larger number were present for the Christmas service at 7 p.m., when the preacher was Major Middlemiss, of the Salvation Armya Solos were sung by Captain Sansom and duets by Mrs. Middlemiss and Captain Sansom. Christmas day was a busy time for the ladies in preparing tiie high tea and setting up the numerous tables in the institute. At 5.45 eighty men sat down to tea and the evening was spent in games and instrumental items, the day concluding with the, singing of the National Anthem and “Auld Lang Syne.” Boxing Day a large number set off by buses for Maori Bank, the grounds being again kindly lent by Mr. E. Quinn, Luncheon and tea were served on the grounds and a very happy time spent in games, sports, etc., the party returning to town at 7 p.m. to a social evening In the institute. The following were the winners of the sports held:—Threelegged race: McLeod and F. Brown 1. Drunken stick race: Thornton 1; Phillips, 2. Married ladies’ race: Mesdames Ede and Jones (tied), 1. Girls race: Gladys Ede. 1; and Brown and E. Ede, 2. Blowing the Hour race: McLeod, 1; Thornton, 2. Throwing the cannonball: McLeod, 1. Single ladies’ race: Miss R. Brown, 1: Miss Gates 2. •High jump: Twine (Mahaua), 1. Old buffers’ race: Hawkins, 1; Towner, 2. Long-distance race: McLeod, 1.
