AUCKLAND MEETING POPULAR WIN FOR COUNT , CAVOUR DERBY TO HUNTING CRY CYLINDER DEFATED BY LIGHT DRAFT Dominion Special Service. Auckland, January 1. The Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting was continued at Ellerslie in showery weather to-day. The going was heavy, but the racing was excellent. The totalisator receipts for the ’ day totalled £74,182/10/-, compared with £98,757 for the corresponding day of last year, a decrease of £24,574/10/-. The total for the three days was £267,674/10/-, as against £238,851/100- for the first three days of last year, an increase of £28,823. inquiries were held into the crossing of Hunting Day by Awarere, and into interference with Silvermine and Refresher, but no action was taken. ELLERSLIE HANDICAP. Storm Fiend and Nassau Lady carried most money in the Ellerslie Handicap, for apprentice riders. Storm Fiend was again left, Luminary and Llyn Dhu working to the front to set the pace to the turn, where Antique and Archieval came on, Antique .winning very easily from Archieval, with Llyn Dhu a poor third, and Nassau Lady, War Officer, and Some Lady next. The winner was unlucky on the second day. She stays very well. Archieval did well after being pocketed in the middle stages, but none of the others are worthy of mention. Storm Fiend lost his chance ' at the barrier. MIDSUMMER HANDICAP. " Cylinder was a warm order in the Midsummer Handicap. He was first out, but Sight Draft and Bells of Shandon soon headed him, and, with Drastic, led to the turn from Cylinder. Sight Draft then came on to win easily from Cylinder, with Bells of Shandon a good third, and Drastic next. Sight Draft handled the ground best. Cylinder seemed to get unbalanced in the run home. Bells of Shandon was the only other to show any promise. NEW YEAR HURDLES. . King’s Guard and Master Roley were the prime fancies for the New Year Hurdles. Wako King, Pangolin and Master Koley were the early pacemakers, King’s Guard joining them six furlongs from home, where Master Roley fell and brought down Kamehameha. King’s Guard drew out at the half-mile and won easily from Pangolin and Elysianor, with Wako King a poor fourth. Master Roley was going easily when he fell. Elysianor was nearly down at the third hurdle and that took a lot of the ginger out of him; The winner outjuinped and outstayed the opposition. RACING CLUB HANDICAP. Pegaway was a good favourite for the Racing Chib Handicap, with Prodice and Corinax next in iequest. Corinax, Amor, Count Cavour, Prodice and Merry Mint raced in close order till the half-mile, where Corinax and Amor drew out a little. The field was close up at the turn, and at the distance Corinax, Count Cavour, and Prodice begun a great battle, Count Cavour winning a thrilling race by a neck from Corinax, with Prodice a head away third, and Amor. Pegsway and Spearmiss next. It was a true race in which everything ■had an equal chance. The weight and ground beat the topweights. Count Cavour received an ovation after the race. Amor, failed after running splendidly to * the distance, and Prodice looked a winner till the last fifty yards. HUNTING CRY’S DERBY. Hunting Cry had a decided margin over Eaglet in the Derby speculation. When they settled down The Sun led V Flying Prince and Royal Parade, with Hunting Cry and Eaglet last. Eaglet moved up near the leaders half a mile from home, Jaleux leading round the turn from Eaglet, Count Palatine and Flying Prince. Hunting Cry then came fast and he soon settled matters, winning rather easily from Jaleux, with Flying Prince a poor third‘and Eaglet next, just heading Vali, Duellona and Count Palatine. Hunting Cry showed decided superiority. Eaglet failed to stay and Count Palatine and Duellona made poor showings when asked to race. ' COUNTY HANDICAP. Valuation was heavily backed in the County Handicap, with Roman Pearl also a strong fancy. Currajong and Patere began best, but Treasury had put a break on the field when they reached the halfmile, Valuation, Currajong, Patere and Roman Pearl being next. Valuation took charge at the turn and won with great ease from Roman Pearl and Gay Cockade, with Tetraehate and Sea Song next. The winner gave an attractive display, never being extended. Tetrachate ran up at the turn and be will win on a dry track. Roman Pearl and Gay Cockade ran their usual honest races. NEWMARKET HANDICAP. ' Both Silvermine and Hunting Day received solid support in the Newmarket • Handicap. Silvermine and Refresher began best, but Great Star was in front at the half-mile, with Refresher, Leitrim and Silvermine, next. Great Star led round the turn from Leitrim, Hunting Day. Refresher and Awarere. The lastnamed then came fast to beat Great Star by a length. Takutama was a close third, with Silvermine and Hunting Day next. Awarere, for once, ran up to track form. Great Star just failed after being forced to the front rather quickly. Silvermine was badly cut back at the three furlongs. GLASGOW HANDICAP. 1 Mervette was disappointed near the turn and her effort was a particularly good one. She is a good mare. Prince Vai had every chance, but was beaten by another good one, this pair being well clear of the rest. King Midas looked dangerous at the distance, but the class was just too good for him. Hakanoa also ran a good race. DETAILS OF THE RACING By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, January 1. ' ELLERSLIE HANDICAP, of 400 sovs. One mile. 3 John Asher’s Antique, 7.7 (Parsons) 1 4 H. TO-DAY’S FIELDS Dominion b“i« , u • .m ice Auckland, January 1. The curtain will be rung down on the summer meeting at Ellerslie to-morrow. The handicap fields have kept up well and good racing should result, particularly as there is hope that conditions will be improved. The Goodwood Handicap will open the programme. Some of the top-weights may be feeling the strain. King Emerald, Taneriri and Lady’s Boy may race prominently. In the Sylvia Handicap Tenterden, Tremetus and Awaken will be backed on form. . , Eleven Is a nice field for the Grandstand Handicap, and with the possibility of a drying track Vertigern, Corinax and Prodice should be in demand. , King’s Guard is still a danger, with all his weight, in the Auckland Hurdles, but he may find it hard to cope with Master Roley and Prince Lu. The Royal Stakes field will dwindle down, and in Hunting Cry’s probable absence Cylinder, Dunrowen and Lag.ct may be the fancied division. With six acceptors the Clifford Plate should be more than ordinarily exciting. Pegaway, Concentrate and Hunting Cry may be backed in order. A fairly small field will contest the Bowen Handicap, in which the favourite may come from Valuation. Great Star and K Tho t flnai is the Grey Handicap, and if it is fine Richfield will be favourite, and lie may experience most trouble from Gay Cockade and Archieval. MARTON MEETING CUP WON BY SINGLETON FREEHOLD SCORES IN RAILWAY HANDICAP (By “The Watcher.”) Marton, January 1. After a threatening forenoon, the Marton Jockey Club’s summer meeting opened in heavy rain. It was not of long duration, however, and the bulk of the programme was got off under fine, though windy, conditions. The track was soft to start with, but dried rapidly, and for the last half of the card was in good order. There was a very large attendance, and some good racing. The cup waa won by the Gisborne representative, Singleton, while Freehold scored in the sprint. The totalisator handled £27,986, compared with £29,662 last New Year’s Day, a decrease of £1676. The Fordell stable supplied three winners and a second. , ~ ’ . - There was a remarkable series of coincidences in the day’s results. A publican won the first race, a publican won the third race, a brewer won the fourth race (the cup), a retired publican won the fifth race, and in the seventh race a publican won, while a brewer’s horse was second. TRIAL PLATE. - Equitant, a solid favourite for the maiden race, was in front all the w'ay, and was never in danger of defeat. She eased up over the last hundred yards, enabling the second favourite, Leisure, to run her to a length. Look Out was a bad fitird, six lengths back, and the bunch were seven or eight lengths away. Potoaform was fourth, followed by Kilorell and Hortense. The winner was the certainty she looked on paper, and outclassed her opponents. Kilorell, from No. 1, failed to jump out, but he finished on. ’ HACK HURDLES. Skyrider was a good first choice in the hurdles, but she was never dangerous, the race being won nicely at the finish by the second favourite, Aurora Borealis, who on form paid a good price. Borsalene made the early running, but after a l couple of poor jumps she was joined by Vinella, and they carried on from Aurora Borealis, Red Lane, Callagain and Skyrider. Aurora Borealis joined the two leaders passing the half-mile, and they led to the last fence from Callagain. Once over, Aurora Borealis stuck on and beat Callagain by two lengths, with Vinella a neck away. Borsalene was a moderate fourth and then came Skyrider and Some Red. The winner covered some extra ground, but in the business stages she always had the measure of her opponents. Callagain ran a good and promising race. Borsalene was well backed and fancied, but she jumped badly, and this inexperience had her well beaten from the last fence home. However, she shaped promisingly. Red Lane ran a poor race. JUVENILE HANDICAP. Acora was the good thing the betting suggested in the Juvenile Handicap. Rule Britannia and Quinola. led her to the straight, with Lord Thomond well up. Acora then hit the front and won by the best part of two lengths from Lord Thomond, who beat Arisus by three lengths. Rule Britannia was fourth, followed by Royal Queen and Acreline. Arisus was a soundly backed second choice. He failed to jump out from No. 1, but finished solidly and was unlucky. Rule Britannia stopped badly over the last bit, probably due to the I soft ground. MARTON CUP. The Cup field drew eight starters. Cashier and Avro, being bracketed, went out red hot favourites, but they were beaten out of the money, the race being won decisively at the finish by the Gisborne representative, Singleton. Full Mark and Otairi set a sound pace from Avro and Cashier, then Hoylake and Singleton. Hoylake moved up alongside Avro and Cashier down the back, and there was no change till nearing the straight. Here Singleton ranged up on the outer and although Full Mark and Otairi were still in charge a furlong from home, Singleton wore them down and won by half a length from Full Mark, who was a bare half-length in front of Otairi Avro was well up fourth, with Hoylake and Cashier in line. Dolomite and Star Area tailed off. The judge missed Otairi, placing Avro' third and Hoylake fourth. No excuses were in order for the defeat of the faijßirites. Singleton won on his merits. Hoylake was well placed and looked likely throughout, •’ but he failed to finish so well as usual. DASH HANDICAP. There was a good finish in the hack sprint. Habit was first out, but Abbey Queen settled down in front of Glenartney and Habit, who ran abreast ahead of Some Acre and Statuary. ' This was the order into line for home, when Habit wore down the leader and sustained a challenge from Glenartney to win by half a length. Statuary finished solidly and just failed to reach Glenartney. Abbey Queen’wks a moderate fourth, clear of Warfille and Some Acre. • The winner is a good galloper in private. She won on Boxing Day at Waipuknrau, but failed subsequently at Ampuni. To-day Iter performance was very good, for she beat a couple of extra good ■lacks in Glenartney and Statuary. RAILWAY HANDICAP. In the five-horse field for the open sprint Freehold started favourite, but The Haider and Keddar were solidly backed. Freehold led all the way, but he only just stalled off a strong challenge from Keddar. Broad Acre, Juggle, and Keddar, bunched, followed Freehold to the straight. Here The Raider, who bad got chopped back a.t the start, pushed forward on the rails. Freehold and Keddar, however, gradually drew away, Freehold winning by n head. The Raider was tho best part of three lengths away third, with Juggle fourth. The winner won handily. The Raider looked a bit unlucky, being given no opportunity to make use of his early brilliance, NEW YEAR HANDICAP. Fine Acre surprised by winning the hack distance event comfortably,, after being prominent all the way, with the favourites, Goldlike and Thrift, just out of the divdends. Phastar and Fine Acre made' the running from Thrift, Patearoa, and Goldlike, in close order. When the straight was reached Fine Acre shot away and won by two lengths from Patearoa, who beat Thrift by a length. Phastar, Rich Harvest, Goldlike, Hatteras and Kilorell were close up. Fine Acre won decisively. STEWARDS’ HANDICAP. High Faintin' was a red hot order for the concluding event. He did not get away too well, but he soon ran up, and in the straight he galloped away to win decisively. Rrigadier Bill and Second Thought made the running when settled down, from Briar Root, High Falutin , Malayan, Roi de Vai, and Wanderlust, bunched. Malayan dropped back in the middle stages, and Brigadier Bill and Second Thought led into line from High Faintin', Briar Root, and Roi de vul. High Faintin’ drew out to win by four lengths from Second Thought, who beat Briar Root by two lengths. Rot de Vai and Wanderlust were on terms next, and then came Brigadier Bill, with Malayan last. . , , Nothing had any chance with the winner. Malayan fan prominently and pull-
ed hard to the straight. The race should improve him. DETAILS OF THE RACING Details of the racing are:— TRIAL PLATE, of 120 sovs., second 15 sovs., third 5 sovs. Weight, 8.7. Six furlongs. 1 S. J. Her form at that time did not lookup to classic standard, as in her second win at Trentham she was receiving 1611). from Chief Link, who was second, but she has improved a lot since then. Gesture is one of the progeny of Chief Ruler, who is having a good season with his Juveniles, and she is trained at Awapuni by Mrs. A. WAIRARAPA RACING CLUB’S MEETING PIUTHAIR NARROWLY WINS CUP ELECTRIC HANDICAP TO ROYAL DUKE Dominion Special Service. Masterton, January 1. Fine weather prevailed for the opening day of the Wairarapa Racing Club s summer meeting at Tauherenikau to-day. There was an excellent attendance, resulting in a substantial increase in the gate takings over those of last J ear < while the totalisator returns exceeded those of the corresponding day of last year by £5898, £29,994 being handled as against £24,096 on the firs tday last year. The racing throughout was full of interest, and in thp Cup the issue was in doubt right up to the judge’s box, Piuthair winning by a very narrow margin from Billion and Atholspear. K. Voitre rode four winners. The officials all worked hard and the management of the meeting was generally good. The course was in excellent order yesterday, but rain commenced to fall at 7 p.m., and the going to-day may be affected. ELECTRIC HANDICAP. From a good start the colours of Banket; Silver Coot and Moorland were the first to .show out. At the end of a furlong Silver Coot, on the rails, held a slight advantage from Banket, Moorland, and Royal Duke. Racing to the straight Silver Coot and Banket still had charge with the others in close, attendance. Royal Duke came through on the rails as they entered the straight. and had charge from Silver Coot and Banket, with Veronese improving her position on the outside. Hard ridden, Royal Duke held to his advantage and won by three quarters of a length from Silver Coot, with Banket two lengths away third. Veronese was fourth. FEATHERSTON HANDICAP. Dermod, Roundelay, and High Heather were scratched for the Featherston Hack Handicap, leaving seven runners, of whom Oscar and High Society were entrusted with most money on the machine. The field got away in line, Dainty Ways and Grecian being the early leaders. High Society ran to the front at the end of a furlong, followed by Waterspear, Grecian, and Dainty Ways. Racing round the bend Mothplane niade a forward move, but received a check and dropped back. Oscar and High Society improved their positions approaching the straight, at the entrance to which High Society had a slight advantage over Grecian with the others following in elose order. High Society could not sustain his position, Dainty Ways replacing him in the lead at the end of six furlongs. A good race over the last hundred yards resulted in favour of Grecian, who had half a length’s advantage over Dainty Ways. Waterspear and Oscar were close up. NURSERY HANDICAP. Recant was tEe only scratching in the Nursery Handicap, the Kemball bracket (Lady Pam and Masterton) being backed down to a short price. A good dispatch was effected, Masterton taking the lead from Santanna and Arajean. This was) the order over the first three furlongs, at the end of which Lady Pam was lying , fourth, Sporting Chance and Benign being a little bit further back. Masterton turned for home first just ahead of • Santanna and Arajean. Lady Pam came through in the straight to win comfortably by a length and a half. Benign finished with a nice burst over the last 160 yards, and got up in time to take second money from Sporting Chance, who was just ahead of Masterton. Lady Ronald and Kalmuck were the last to finish. I Arajean and Santanna ran well for four furlongs. WAIRARAPA CUP. Seven scratchings saw a field of nine go out to contest the cup. The horses were in a nice line as the tapes were released, but Stanchion swung out and caused some interference to the two lt,orses immediately alongside of him. At the stand- the first time the field was being piloted by Teri, from Arrow Lad Talijcer, Stanchion, Royal Lineage and Billion. After passing the mile post, Arrow Lad was showing out from Teri, Royal Lineage, Talisker and Billion. At the five-furlong post Piuthair .had run into fifth place, and further improved her position over the next two furlongs. Courageous, who was tailing the field, also improved his position on the bend. Teri, on the rails, led from Royal Lineage, Billion and Atholspear at the straight entrance. Once in line for home, Piuthair came through and held a slight advantage over Atholspear at the outer stand. In a stirring finish, Piuthair hung on long enough to win by a head from Billion, with Atholspear the same distance away, third. Stanchion came up with a nice run over the last two furlongs, and was three lengths further back fourth. CHAMPION HACK HANDICAP. Clarendon was fractious at the post and unsettled several of the others. After some delay the field got away to a good start, Clarendon and) Oscar being the last to settle down. Kiriana, Shortly and Chopin were the early leaders. Approaching the five furlong post, Emotion had charge from Fernden, Kiriana, and Shortly, with Clarendon moving up on the outside of the field. With three furlongs to go Fernden, Oscar, Emotion, Clarendon and Shortly were racing in close order. Entering the straight, Kiriana came round on tlie outside of the field, but could not sustain his run. Chopin, who was towards the end of the field with two furlongs to go, forged his way to the front about 50 yards from the post and, withstanding a vigorous challenge from Fernden, se'cured victory by a bead. Oscar was a length away third, with Shortly right up fourth. WARDELL HANDICAP. Maui, Imateagirl and Billion were scratched for the Wardell Handicap. When the tapes were released, Joy Bird and Arikinui were quickest into their stride, but the first-named dropped back to last before a furlong had been covered. Round the bend Arikinui led from Callanmore, Cerf, Miss Ransom and Makeup. Rory Mor and Don Jose improved their positions on the bend. Shortly after entering the straight the field was racing in close order across the course. The result was in doubt until within a few yards of the post, where Makeup just got his head in front of Callanmore. They raced stride for stride to the post, Makeup gaining the verdict by half a head, with Miss Ransom a neck away third. Arikinui and Cerf finished just behind Miss Ransom. WHAREKAHA HANDICAP. Noteworthy was made a good favourite in the Wharekalta Handicap. When the tapes were released the favourite lost some ground., Mandy, Footpad and Ben Hur commencing the best. Noteworthy made up her ground quickly and at the end of a furlong was second to Footpad, Mandy, Agrestic and Waterspear following in that order. At the straight entrance there was little between Noteworthy, Mandy and Footpad. Mandy assumed charge a furlongs from home, and, kept up to her work, withstood strong challenges from Ben Hur and Waterspenr to win by bnlf a head from Ben H.ur, with Wat'erspear a length away. Agrestic
was fourth. Noteworthy failed to see the journey out. NOVICE STAKES. The day’s racing closed with the running of the Novice Handicap, the start of which was over half an hour behind schedule. General Gas and Spearset were the smartest away, but before a furlong had been covered Dancing Star had charge from Projection, Tunbridge, Wine Tray and Rational 11. There was no substantial alteration of positions over the next three furlongs. Dancing Star and Projection wage still in front as they swung into the straight, and halfway down the running it looked as though Projection would prevail. Voight, however, then sent Rational II along, and he won nicely from Projection. Tunbridge outstayed Dancing Star and secured third money. DETAILS OF THE RACING By Telegraph.—Press Association.
