TROUBLE ON EMDEN
OFFICIAL VERSION NOT SERIOUS ENOUGH FOR MUTINY Berlin, December 30. The publication of the Emden mutiny story was responsible for a somewhat tardy official statement by the Defence Ministry, professing to give the facts. It' sets out that when the cruiser anchored off Puerto Columbia,- on October 13, some of the crew ashore drank too much tropical beer, became hilarious; sang “The Internationale,” and hoisted a red handkerchief., When they reached Wilhelmshafen. three of the arrested sailors were courtmartialled. The decision of the Court, however, was that the offence did not constitute mutiny, and the punishment was light. . ■ . The “Daily Telegraph s Berlin correspondent, recording the explanation, adds that the Defence Ministry’s explanations of embarrassing facts are so often misleading that this one hardly reassures the public mind. Indeed, responsible newspapers declare that even the official version indicates a most unsatisfactory state of discipline aboard the bearer of the proud name of Emden. '■
