CHRISTMAS AT “THE CHATEAU”

Christmas Eve was the commencement of a very bright and happy holiday at the Chateau, Tongarlro. Although the weather was grey and wet, the icsinc spirits of the guests were not dampencu Snow fell during th afternoon, and caused quite a lot of excitement. Christmas Day broke grey and cold, interspersed with cold, heavy showers, but many went out for walks and climbing despite the weather. During the early morning and breakfast Christmas carols were played, and in the afternoon Mrs. Maunsell and Mr. Notley (violinist) played appropriate music at intervals. An impromptu fancy dress ball on Boxing Night caused much thought, and called one’s imagination into full play. The results were very creditable, and some splendid costumes appeared. All competitors were masked until after the judging. The winners were as follow: —Best lady, Mrs. Seymour, “Powder and Patches”; best man, Mr. Burstall, “Zulu”; best couple, Mr. and Miss Peggy Leary, “Spuds”; most original lady Mrs. Maurice, "Emporium”; Most original man, J.
