AIRSHIP R101
ADDITIONAL GASBAG TO BE INSERTED INCREASE IN LIFTING CAPACITY (“Tinies" Cables.) London, December 27. The aeronautical correspondent of “The Times” says that the major modification of the airship RlOl involves cutting the vessel in halves in order to insert an additional bag containing a gasbag of half a million cubic feet capacity. It is estimated to increase the ship s lift at least six tons. The length will then be 800 feet, easily the greatest yet built, and the total gas capacity will be 5.500,000 cubic feet. With other modifications, the total increase in the lifting capacity is calculated to reach fifteen tons. While it would be wrong to expect the RlOl to thus become a commercial proposition, it would be equally wrong to assume that airships generally are not commercially practicable, because RlOl has been designed on safety lines as an experiment.
