AMATEUR ATHLETICS
MEETING AT BASIN RESERVE SUCCESSFUL DAY’S SPORT GROSE IN GOOD FORM Between two and three thousand people were present at the Basin Reserve yesterday afternoon when the Boxing Day athletic meeting was held. Though a cold and strong northerly wind was blowing across the ground, the events were contested by big fields, and several very close finishes were seen, fairly good times being recorded. A feature of the meeting was the number of outsiders competing. F. (’rose, of Canterbury, carried off nearly all of the A grade cycling events, and Miss K. Cullinan, also of Christchurch, showed to advantage in the ladies’ events. A. Elliott, of Auckland, took third place in the two sprint events, while Miss M. Barron, of Foxton, was successful in the 100 yards ladies’ invitation race, though Miss Hoyle, of Napier, was unlucky throughout. Two whippet races were included on the programme, and these pleased the spectators. Throughout the long programme the events were run to time, and credit is due to the marshal (Mr. A. C. Kitto), the starter (Mr. L. A. Tracy), and the clerk of the course (Mr. J. Stalker), and the numerous officials connected with the gathering for the way in which it was run.
