BOWLS

WELLINGTON CENTRE TOURNEY t BRIGHT WEATHER AND KEEN GAMES YESTERDAY’S WINS AND LOSSES Forty-six rinks (184 players) are concerned in the Wellington Centre’s annual rink tournament, which commenced yesterday morning. The players are divided into four sections, and each section plays on a different green on each of the three days of section play. Thanks to the varied state of the weather the greens are in very good order. Probably the Wellington Club’s green was the fastest of the four used yesterday, owing to the fact that it was very closely shaven and bare patches are already beginning to show up, although there has not been a great deal of play so far this season. The Thorndon Club's green is in very good order, whilst both Victoria and Hataitai Clubs’ greens arc playing truly. The conditions yesterday were, on the whole, favourable. It was bright and warm for the greater part of the day, with a rather high wind to upset the most careful calculations on occasions. The results of the day’s play were as follow: — FIRST ROUND. Lopdell (Hutt) and Cathie (Karori) had a rare battle on the Hataitai green yesterday morning. There was a tie on

the last head, and Lopdell just managed to get one shot in on the extra head. One of the most salutary decisions m the first round yesterday was the defeat of Jamieson (Victoria) by Robertson (Petone), 24 —9. Another extraordinary win was Lopdell’s 33 against Millner’s 3 in the third round. .. , Even though Crawford (Karon) only scored on eight heads in his game witli Pollock (Newtown), he only lost the game by one point. Crawford’s score included a 7. a 4, and three 3’s. Duff (Wellington) mid Neilson (Karori) had a great fight on the Wellington green yesterday morning. Neilson looked pretty safe with a four-point lead on the nineteenth head, but on the twentieth Newtown drew four shots. On the extra head, Neilson managed to draw the siiot and bold it. How one shot may alter the whole complexion of a game was illustrated yesterday morning in the rink game between Glendining (Wellington) and Bedell (Newtown). On the seventeenth head Bedell was lying four nice shot when Glendining had only one bowl to play. That one proved to be a real pearl of shots, for it just trailed the kitty with gentle firmness away from the Newtown bowls, to a group of his own mid lay six! This one bowl made a difference o£ ten points. CANADIAN BOWLERS IN WELLINGTON ON ' JANUARY. 20 The bowling event-of first importance next month —apart from the Dominion Association’s tournament—will be the
