HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL

ROAD RECONSTRUCTION LOAN.

The Hutt County Council met yesterday afternoon. Councillor D. RHoggard presided. Councillors W. V. Dyer, S. Blackley, F. Bradey, J. M. Whiteman, R. Button, and A. Mackay also were present. The Karopoti bridge, which lost its central pillar, came in for some discussion. Councillor Whiteman said that Campbell Bros, were paying £l2OO yearly in timber royalties which they would not’get but for the bridge. The council now had but one ratepayer in the vicinity. The chairman, reviewing the position, said that the bridge had been erected many years ago over the Little Akatarawa Stream, near Campbell’s mill. It was used by Campbell Bros, for the cartage of timber, and by motorists. The bridge bad collapsed, and was now unsafe for traffic. The County Council was deriving but little from the ratepayers served by the road, and he suggested that the Water Board should replace the bridge. It was decided to approach the Water Board concerning the matter. The raising of a £3525 loan for road reconstruction, with a term of 20 years, and a rate of interest not more than 51 per cent., the sinking fund ; being 3 per cent., was approved.
