VALENTINO: A MEMORY

On the United States side of the Atlantic, among those who remember the things and people of three years ago, there is a prevalent opinion that Rudolph Valentino belonged more or less exclusively to America. It is also a matter of. popular belief that he was beloved here more than/anywhere else on earth, and that his belovedness was imperishable. He died August 23, 1926; but there were no noticeable tributes to his memory in the California newspapers on the recent anniversary of his passing. Yet in the “In Memoriam” column of one London newspaper for August 23 this year, we find (observes the San Francisco “Argonaut”) the following five paid notices: Valentino, Rudolph.—ln memoriam. He being dead yet speaketh. Hand immemor neque. in aeternum. —J.E.F. Valentino.—ln memory of Rudolph Valentino, who fell asleep August 23. 1926, aged 31. “Of all sorts enehantingly beloved. Valentino. —In loving memory of Rudolph Valentino, who died August 23, 1926, aged 31. “The man who lightened human hearts.” Valentino. —Rudolph Valentino, who left this life August 23, 1926. “To wing with music, an eternal youth.”—Three Admirers. ' \

Valentino.—ln loving memory of Rudolph Valentino, who passed on August 23. 1926.

How can they be dead when they live in your memory., In America, undoubtedly, adds the “Argonaut,” awe have developed the useful technique of forgetting in a manner that is generations in advance of anything in that line as yet achieved abroad.
