Mr. and Mrs. Bartik, of Australia, are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. I*. Nathan, "Llandaff,” Masterton. Miss L. Payton, of Masterton, is spending a holiday at Stewart Island. Mrs. H. Nicolson and the Misses Nicolson (2), of Otaki, intend spending the Christmas and New Year holidays at “Melverton,” Clareville. Miss Miller (Otaki) left for Australia yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. Dempsey (Otaki) will spend the holidays in Auckland. Mrs. IL Fielding (Te Iloro) is visiting relatives at Dunedin.

Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Levett, of Bulls, are staying at Paraparaumu beach. Miss Jordan, Wanganui, is visiting Auckland.

Mrs. Ashton has just returned from Palmerston North, where she has spent the week in consultation over the formation of the New Zealand branch of the British-Israel World Federation.

Mrs. Pitt has returned to Auckland from a holiday in Norfolk Island, and will be returning to Wanganui in January. Mr. and Mrs. H. (V. Hazard and family, "Wanganui, are on a motor tour of the North Island. Mrs. E. Whiteman og Kakatahi, is visiting Wanganui. Mr. and Mrs. Heetor Bailee, of Napier, are the guests of Mrs. TV. Willis. Mr. and Mrs. F. Turnbull and family, of Wanganui, are visiting Auckland. Mrs. T. Taylor, Wanganui, is visiting Wellington. Miss J. McLaren is a Wanganui visitor to Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. N. Barstow and family arc visiting Auckland. Mrs. Healey, of Auckland, is the guest of Mrs. McArtuey, of Wanganui East.

Mrs. Scales, of Claudelands, Waikato, is spending a holiday in Palmerston North, and goes later to Okati and Gisborne. Mrs. J. Hughes, of Palmerston North, accompanied by her family, is spending the summer holidays at Paraparaumu. Mrs. W. Chambers, of Auckland, is visiting Palmerston North. Mr. and Miss Johnson, of Timaru, are visitors to Palmerston North. Mrs. E. W. West and family, of Victoria Avenue, Palmerston North, are spending a holiday at Foxton Beach. Miss A. Cornfoot, of “Greenlea,” Halcombe, has been attending the breaking-up festivities at lona College, Havelock North.

On Tuesday evening, at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. K. McDonald, Pascal Street, Palmerston North, a bridge party was given in honour of Miss E. Macaulay, whose marriage takes place shortly. Mrs. M. Loftus and Miss L. McDonald were hostesses, and each guest brought a utensil suitable for kitchen use, and many useful articles were unwrapped by the bride-elect The rooms were decorated with vases of sweet peas, and a delicious savoury supper was served. Mrs. Haldane McEwen and Mrs. Toogood won amusing competitions. Mrs. Loftus and Miss McDonald received their guests in the hall, Mrs. Loftus being attired in a cherry georgette frock, and Miss McDonald a deep beige lace. Miss Macaulay’s frock was of black taffeta, and lace over shell pink satin. Canon Woodward presided at the gathering of the Mothers’ Union, held last Wednesday afternoon, when five new members were admitted. Mrs. Woodward sent an apology for absence. A most impressive talk on Christmas was given by Canon' Woodward. An invitation was received from Mrs. Crooke, president of the Marton branch, to. a garden party to be held at her residence, ’ Astolat,” Marton, on February 12. The next meeting of the Palmerston North branch will be held at the Esplanade on February 19. An interesting letter, from the branch’s link in England, Swindon, written by Miss Harvey, Canon Harvey’s sistqr, was read by the secretary, Mrs. Metcalfe. It was also reported from the Mothers’ Union headquarters, Mary Sumner House, London, that an increase of 17,515 members in England and 3155 overseas members made a total increase of 20,670 Mothers’ Union members for the year. The balance on the year's working was £l5Ol/16/9. There are now 5500 members in New Zealand.

Miss M. Jarvie, of Wanganui, left yesterday for a holiday in Sydney. Mrs. Mathieson, of Wellington, was the guest of Mrs. J. Franklin, of Wanganui. during the week. Miss J. Lilburn returned to Wanganui from Taihape yesterday. A quaint ceremony took place on the Taihape School grounds during the week in connection with the erection of the new infant building. The mistress, Miss E. M. Billing, lined her classes up before the foundations, and at the direction of the works foreman, laid in position the first brick. The headmaster (Mr. B. M. Kibblewhite) then took the opportunity of presenting Miss Billing on behalf of her classes jvith a casserole dish and a nest of saucepans, wishing her every success in her new sphere of life. Miss Billing is to be married early in the New Year. Clifton House, Wanganui, ■ held its prize-giving in St. Paul’s Hall on Thursday afternoon, when a programme of songs, folk-dances, and drill was given. Mrs. Hales, who presented the prizes, was presented with a bouquet, aud also the principal. Miss Currie. Mrs. F. Moreton presented the prizes at Thursday night’s breakiug-up of the Friends’ School. Wanganui. Mr. Alexander, of the Friends’ School, Hobart, was present, and spoke of the work of the schools. Opportunity was taken to welcome Mr. aud Mrs. A. Douglas (England), who have recently arrived to take the positions vacated by Mr. and Mrs. F. Moreton. Mr. A. Goldsbury spoke of the splendid work 'accomplished by Mr, and Mrs. Moreton and welcomed their SU Ngl S °Tawa School, Marton, held its annual breaking-up ceremonies on Wednesday and Thursday. Special interest centred this year in the functions, as the foundation stone of the new chapel was laid by the Bishop of Wellington yesterday afternoon iu the presence ot a large number of old and present pupils and friends. A large sum was raised by the sale of bricks to be used for the new chapel. Stalls were held in the school bv present and past pupils, and the proceeds are to be devoted to the chapel funds. On Wednesday night a very well acted play, “Mr. Bym Passes By, was staged. Among the many visitors 'present were: —Mrs. Walkington and Miss Walkington (Waverley), Mrs. H. D’Arcy. Mrs. IL B. Gillies (Palmerston North), and Mr. and Mrs. Orton (Wanganui). An enjoyable afternoon was tendered Mrs. J. W. Bailey, Wanganui, on Thursday afternoon, at Virginia Lake Kiosk. The hostesses were Mesdames C. I. Spillane and T. L. Sperring. In making the presentation to Mrs. Bailey of several gifts, Mrs. Sperring referred to the great loss Wanganui would sustain in losing Mr. and Mrs. Bailey, who had lidded so greatly to the joy of life in the city with their ' plays. Among those present wpre Mesdames Clinknrd, AV. GGibson, H. Anderson, F. Carpenter, Therklcton, Derbyshire, R. E. Cuthbertson, Ivo Symes, J. Bull Day (Palmerston North), T. Thomas and Miss Nelson. Wilford Grigg tendered them a gift evening fin honour of their approaching marriage. The time was spent with dancing, music being supplied by Te Tim’s Orchestra, and items by Misses Avis Trotman. Joyce Vile, Evelyn Nichols and Sir. E. Graham, all of which were well received. Mr. R. Hills asked the guests of the evening to come forward and open up the parcels, when a large number of useful gifts wore displayed. Sir. 11. Farley, on behalf of the' Oddfellows’ Lodge, of which lodge both were members, then presented the voting couple with a handsome silvermounted crystal salad bowl. Sir. Grigg suitably replied.
