INTOXICATED DRIVER
■ .. * CAR ILLEGALLY TAKEN CRASH THROUGH WINDOW 1 Palmerston North, December 20. In the Palmerston North. Magistrate’s Court this morning Kenneth Gordon Don, aged 32, appeared before Mr. .1. L. Stout, S.M., on charges of being intoxicated in charge of a car, and of unlawfully converting a motor-car to his own use. SeniorSergeant Whitehouse stated that Don had driven into a plate-glass window. “You seem to have done a lot of damage,” commented the Magistrate. “The window will cost £l7 and the ear is damaged a good bit,” said the Senior-Sergeant. . “Have you any money.' His worship questioned defendant. “Practically none,” he replied. Defendant went on to explain that as far as the charge of drunkennes was concerned, lie had had a bad cold, and for several days had been confined to his bed. “I got out of bed and went up the street and—well, that’s what happened,” he said. The Magistrate fined defendant £2 for being drunk while in charge of a car, and convicted him and ordered him to come up for sentence any time within twelve mouths on a charge of unlawfully converting a motor-car to his own use. “The condition is that you start right away and pay the damage to the window and car by monthly instalments,” he said. “If you fail to keep up these instalments you will be liable to three months’ imprisonment.” On a third charge of failing to comply with the conditions of his release on probation. he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon any time within six months. >
