Vice-Regal. Their Excellencies Sir Charles and Ladv Alice Fergusson will return from the South Island by the ferry steamer this morning, and will leave for Masterton to-morrow. They will be at Government House over Christmas, and will leave for Auckland at the end of the month. The Minister of Railways (Hou. W. B. Taverner) returned to Wellington from Dunedin yesterday. Mr. Justice MacGregor will leave in February on a trip to England. The Leader of the Opposition (Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates) left for the north yesterday afternoon. Sir George Elliot and Mr. O. Nicholson, of the Bank of New Zealand directorate, arrived in Wellington from Auckland yesterday morning in order to attend a meeting of the board of directors. Sir H. Lindo Fergusson left Wellington on his return to Dunedin last night. He has. been attending a meeting of the Board of Health.

The Right Rev. C. A. Cherrington, Bishop of Waikato, is expected to leave for England to attend the Lambeth Conference early in February.

Sir Henry Buckleton, general manager of the Bank of New Zealand, accompanied by Lady Buckleton, left for the north by last night’s Limited express.

The Hon. W. D. Stewart, M.P. for Dunedin West, left on his return to Dunedin last night.

Mr. J. A. Young, M.P. for Hamilton, left for Marton yesterday to attend the presentation of prizes at Ngatawa Girls’ College. He will proceed to Hamilton to-day.

Mr. W. J. Broadfoot, M.P. for Waitomo, arrived in Wellington yesterday. He will return to Te Kuiti to-day.

Mr. A. Hall Skelton, of Auckland, left by the Niagara for Fiji and Samoa on a holiday trip.

Mr. P. J. O’Regan returned from Auckland yesterday morning.

Captain E. L. Orr-Ewing, A.D.C. to His Excellency the Governor-General, returned to Wellington from Auckland yesterday morning.

Mr. E. F. Hollands has taken up his position as engineermanager to the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board. Members of the board, at the monthly meeting yesterday afternoon, extended a cordial welcome to Mr. Hollands, who was electrical engineer at Timaru before taking up his present appointment.

Canon Langford Smith, of Sydney, arrived at Auckland on the Marama this week, and will spend six months in New Zealand. He is accompanied by his wife and two sons.

The Rev. James Burns, M.A., who has been occupying the pulpit of Knox Church, Dunedin, for the last twelve months, will complete his ministry in Knox. Church next Sunday. He will preach at St. Raul’s Church, Christchurch, on December 29, and will then leave for England.

Mr. and Mrs. O. G. Doepel will leave by the Maunganui for Sydney this afternoon. They expect to be away for several weeks, returning to Wellington at the end of January.

At the breaking-up ceremony of Wellington Technical College yesterday, Mr. J. H. Howell referred to the loss the college had sustained during the year by the deaths of Mr. T. Ballinger and Mr. A. D. Riley.

Mr. Stanley Grant, touring manager for J. C. Williamson’s newest musical comedy company playing “Whoopee,” is a visitor to Wellington.

The funeral of the late Mr. Walter Lange took place at Karori cemetery yesterday afternoon, and was largely attended by members of the Wellington fire police and fire brigade. Deceased had been a member of the fire police for the past 20 years. He held the position of secretary from 1921 to 1924, only resigning because of 111-health. He was placed on the list of honorary members at the annual meeting last April. Among those present at the funeral were: Superintendant Creeke, station officers Leadbrook and Pope, of the Wellington Fire Brigade, and Captain John Wright, Deputy-Captain Ballinger. Lieuts. J. Short, E. Harlen, F. Boyd, and G. W. Key, of the Wellington Fire Police.

Lieutenant A. H. Abernethy, of the Ist C Battalion, and Lieutenant A. M. Mcß. Rennie, of the Ist Battalion, of the Wellington Regiment, have been promoted to the rank of captain. Similar rank has been conferred upon Lieutenants S. I. Jones, E. N. McL. Hogben, and J. G. Nolan, of the Hawke’s Bay Regiment.

Captain F. S. Varnham, M.C., of the Ist Battalion of the Taranaki Regiment, has been promoted to the rank of major.
